CEI works closely with farm and food businesses to address operational, workforce, and market access. Our industry focus on agriculture and food systems supports the legacy and promise of Maine’s farms, recognizing the need for economic diversification and environmental sustainability. We provide free, sector-specific advising to entrepreneurs starting, growing or transitioning their successful business; access to financing from microloans to equity investments; and advocate for pragmatic policy solutions that reduce barriers and expand opportunities for businesses and families.

The StartSmart program at CEI provides free business assistance for Maine’s immigrants and refugees who are economically disadvantaged and need individualized support to realize their dreams. We provide one-on-one advising with each new client, providing individualized information and working with them at their individual level of business-readiness. Our advising is culturally appropriate and is designed to introduce people to the American business culture, while providing interpreters when needed and respecting the individual’s religious and cultural practices.

The CEI Women’s Business Center helps female entrepreneurs overcome the barriers they face in becoming thriving entrepreneurs; both financially and personally. We offer free 1:1 business advising; workshops, events, and cohort programming; financial literacy education and counseling and access to capital to help women in Maine start or grow their businesses. We consciously bring groups of women together to learn with and from one another, and to be a source of support and inspiration for each other.

CEI provides advising and financing to Maine-based fisheries and aquaculture businesses to improve their long-term viability, create and maintain quality jobs, safeguard marine-related infrastructure and environments, and help preserve the cultural integrity of Maine’s working waterfront.

We provide free advising on options for switching your business, municipality, nonprofit or farm to clean energy; access to financing for solar and energy efficiency installation businesses as well as
