What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Grantmaking
The Maine Commmunity Foundation's grantmaking program focuses on strengthening Maine communities. Its grantmaking philosophy is based on John McKnight's assets-based model of community building. Grants awarded by the foundation build on the strengths of communities, take a preventative approach to community problems and support leadership development.
MaineCF funds projects in all interest areas, from education, to the arts, to community development, to the environment and youth. Grants from competitive funds range in size from $1 to $10,000 in our small grants program, and $10 to $20K in our organizational capacity building grant program.
The foundation works closely with many of its donors to identify programs and organizations that are doing important community-building work in Maine.
In addition, the foundation partners with national foundations, such as the Lumina Foundation and The Atlantic Philanthropies, to address statewide issues.
Community Building Grant Program
The Community Building Grant Program seeks to support organizations and programs that recognize and build on a community’s strengths and assets. MaineCF's voluntary county, regional and statewide committees review proposals and make recommendations for funding.
To be considered for funding, an organization’s proposal must:
Use existing community resources to strengthen community life
Strengthen communities’ and organizations’ ability to meet future challenges
Be sustainable or have a lasting impact after MaineCF grant funding is complete.
Equity Fund
The Equity Fund's mission is to strengthen lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) organizations in Maine and support community-based initiatives that address LGBTQ issues and needs.
People of Color Fund
The goal of the People of Color Fund grant program is to help people of color in Maine to achieve greater equity by:
investing in the development of existing, new, and emerging leadership
supporting organizations that serve communities of color
assisting communities and individuals of color to affect systemic change
Maine Expansion Arts Fund
The Maine Expansion Arts Fund is the result of a collaborative effort of the National Endowment for the Arts, Lillian M. Berliawsky Charitable Trust, Maine Community Foundation, and Maine Arts Commission to strengthen and ensure the future of these artistic traditions. A permanent endowed fund, the Maine Expansion Arts Fund supports indigenous, ethnic, or rural arts programs or projects, particularly those that serve areas with limited access to arts events.
