Mission

Founded in 2002, the Fauna Sanctuary was established to financially assist organizations that provide refuge for the many captive chimpanzees who have been used in biomedical research, entertainment or were former pets. The Fauna Sanctuary has two main goals: - To assist in providing enrichment and a quality of life, through an improved physical environment, for chimpanzees currently living in such sanctuaries, and To assist those organizations that provide refuge for the many existing captive chimpanzees in need of sanctuary. The Fauna sanctuary, Inc. raises money to provide funding for special projects and capital campaigns that will achieve these goals. In addition, it funds educational programs about the lives of chimpanzees in captivity in North America, their use in the entertainment business and biomedical research. In large part, it supports the work of the Fauna Foundation located outside Montreal, Canada. The Fauna Foundation was the first sanctuary in the world to accept HIV-infected chimpanzees.
