Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
spay/neuter support
Deming Animal Guardians provides spay/neuter support under 3 scenerios:
- low-income pet owners (this includes the vast majority of people residing in Luna County, NM);
- rescued dogs and cats that would otherwise be picked up by animal control; 100% of spay/neuter is covered for these animals if requested.
- feral cats: anyone in the county who is interested in controlling a feral cat population in their area is provided with instructions for capture, traps and 100% coverage of spay/neuter expenses.
Discounts are negotiated with local veterinarians for services. Spay/neuter clinics additionally are conducted by these veterinarians twice a year.
emergency pet food bank
When pet owners are on the verge of surrendering their animals to the shelter due to lack of pet food, we provide what is necessary; in return, they are required to spay/neuter their pets if they want to receive this service in the future. We provide them w/ discount spay/neuter coupons.
vacinations
prior to spay/neuter surgery animals are required to have rabies vaccinations; many people cannot afford this so we provide financial aid; we additionally conduct vaccination clinics in conjunction with Deming Animal Clinic and/or help fund other vaccines to offset the cost and encourage vaccinations (e.g. distemper, parvo) when funds allow.
Emergency veterinary loans
When finances permit, we make loans to indigent pet owners to cover emergency veterinary expenses. We expect these loans to be repaid, however repayment rates are low
DAGSHIP Rescue & Columbus Animal Rescue (CAR)
No-kill shelters which rehabilitate dogs and cats for adoption or transfer to other no-kill shelters for adoption. The doors of DAGSHIP officially opened in May 2017 but prior to this more than 500 animals were adopted by the owners of Sunshine Grooming and Columbus Rescue. Annually we rescue approximately 300-350 animals. Our live release rate is consistently >90% (over 95% in 2020), making us a "no-kill" shelter within the animal welfare world.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
After 30 years of operation, we've sponsored more than 14,500 spay/neuter surgeries in Luna County.
We sponsor vaccination clinics, bring in spay/neuter vans and operate an emergency pet food bank which 'feeds into' our spay/neuter program.
We officially opened two non-kill shelters that were responsible for rehoming or transferring 342 animals in 2020. We've begun to accept death row animals from the local humane society shelter.
We have more than 100 members and have the support of our local government in our efforts to address the feral cat population through Trap-Neuter-Release. We have thousands of Facebook followers and growing community support.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
1. Aggressive focus on spay/neuter of pets from low income residents in Luna Count.
2. Cooperation with the local humane society animal shelter.
3. Non-financial support for two independently operating no-kill shelters in the county.
4. Planning to fund solar energy for our no-kill shelter
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
* Our board of directors is active in supporting our goals and works to make the happen; additionally, we have more than 20 regular volunteers who help with social media, spay/neuter van visits, emergency pet food distribution and make our work possible. This is critical since we are an all-volunteer charity with that operates out of our homes.
* 30 years of experience & dedication.
* Board members with varied backgrounds; however, all have a love and appreciation of what animals add to the quality of life and quality of a community
* A nacent, but growing "legacy" program to fund future solar power for our no kill shelter
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Accomplishments:
1. 30 years of successful operation
2. >14,500 sponsored spay/neuter surgeries to date
3. Creation of no-kill shelters in Luna County
4. Growing awareness of the role of financial support by local government entities
Need to Accomplish:
1. Breaking down cultural barriers to spay/neuter within parts of the Hispanic community.
2. Greater cultural diversity of our Board of Directors
3. Making Luna County, NM a "no-kill" county for companion animals (i.e. total euthanasias and deaths <10%)

- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
