ANIMAL RESCUE LEAGUE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The Animal Rescue League of NH (ARLNH) improves animal welfare in our communities by helping pets and the people who care for them. Each year our organization helps more than 2,200 cats, dogs, and small animals. These animals arrive at our door from owner surrenders, shelter outreach, hoarding situations, animal cruelty and neglect cases, as well as transports from shelter partners around the country. We provide medical services, daily care, food, shelter, training and enrichment while these animals await adoption into their forever home.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Spayapalooza
Eligible financially disadvantaged pet owners can receive subsidized assistance with spay/neuter surgery. The League holds six of these spay/neuter clinics per year.
CAAF - Companion Animal Assistance Fund
The CAAF program helps pet owners who can afford day-to-day care but may be burdened with a one-time extraordinary vet expense. This way the animal can stay in a loving home rather than enter the sheltering system.
Safe Haven
Providing free shelter (limited time) for animals when their owner is a victim of domestic violence and cannot find shelter with their pet, or in the case of natural disasters.
Adoption Services
Trained counselors assist potential adopters to find the companion animal that best suits their lifestyle. Follow up support and consultation is also provided to help ensure long term success.
Outreach & Investigations
The League has one of three trained cruelty investigators in New Hampshire. We offer services that cover the largest population center and geographic area. Through this program we provide assistance to animals in hoarding/neglect/abuse situations and assist our community with management of feral cat populations.
Food Pantry
The League stocks supplies to help pet owners ensure that their pets have enough to eat if the family can’t afford food. People pick up the food at the League, but we also will deliver to people without transportation as well as share food though other partner organizations, such as ones which work with feral cat colonies. We have more than 35 active food pantry clients.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
In addition to providing medical services, daily care, food, shelter, training and enrichment for over 2200 animals as they await adoption into their forever home we are also working hard in our community to provide pet owners with the resources and education they need to be able to keep their pets in their own home.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We provide ongoing services that promote and protect the human/animal bond to our community. To that end we provide the following services: Low cost spay/neuter clinics, a pet food pantry, shelter and adoption services for homeless animals, community education opportunities, stray reunification, a Companion Animal Assistance Fund (CAAF) to assist those with one-time extraordinary veterinarian bills, Safe Haven, behavioral consultation, trap-neuter-release services and cruelty and neglect intervention.
The Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire is committed to being a good community partner with a wide variety of government agencies and other nonprofits that serve animals and people. We consistently look to partner with other organizations in order to increase our community impact.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The ARLNH was founded in 1902 and incorporated in 1904. In 1942, the ARLNH's first shelter facility was opened in Goffstown in a renovated home. In 1998, we opened our new facility in Bedford. The building has undergone some modifications over time as the work of shelters has continued to evolve. As we move forward we continue to bring the facility up to current trends in animal housing.
The Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire has been in existence for 116 years. We have managed to maintain excellent services through depressions, recessions, and economic downturns; we have great community support and a very qualified and dedicated team. Long term sustainability is what our entire organization is working towards.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since 1902 the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire has been helping pets and the people who care for them. Our reach is statewide and our Director of Outreach and Investigations is constantly on the road bringing in animals in need from as far away as the northern tip of New Hampshire. 2018 has marked the beginning of some shelter renovations and our hiring of a full-time shelter veterinarian. Both of these things will enable us to expand our community impact and serve a larger population. Increasing our partnerships with other organizations is an additional priority.
