What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Hale Day Camp
Hale Day Camp (HDC) offers a wide variety of summer camp experiences. From our Traditional Camps to our Outdoor Adventure and Mountain Biking Camps to our Leaders in Training (LIT) program for teens, we deliver a summer of fun for campers aged four and up! Whether your camper joins us for the entire season or just a few sessions, we’ll fill their days with adventure and have them home in time for dinner.
We believe in the power of traditional camp activities in the great outdoors. Situated in a remote corner of Hale’s 1,137 acres, our private campus features its own pond, lodge, athletic fields, and archery range where campers swim, hike, canoe, fish, learn arts and crafts, and more. HDC offers a safe place for campers to explore, make friends, and create memories that last a lifetime.
Partner Camps
Boston-area human service agencies operate daily activities from program-specific sites. Hale provides facilities, a health center, and activity specialists that afford 4,400 participants from 70 Greater Boston communities with opportunities to swim, boat, hike, learn about nature, and climb on our challenge courses.
Hale Outdoor Learning Adventures (HOLA)
HOLA is comprised of two projects, both of which blend academic content taught by certified teachers with traditional camp activities such as swimming, boating, climbing, archery, and more. The first project is the HOLA Summer Learning Project (SLP). Hale, Boston Public Schools (BPS), and Boston After School & Beyond collaborate to deliver this five-week experience at no cost to the students. The second project is the HOLA Match Project. Hale collaborates with Match Education to deliver this four-week experience.
Intrepid Academy at Hale
Intrepid Academy at Hale (IAH) has been designed by an advisory group of experienced educators from public, private, and charter education organizations. This new semester school provides accessible outdoor learning opportunities on Hale’s 1,137-acre campus. Its innovative approach leverages the curricular expertise of classroom teachers and the pedagogical expertise of Hale’s outdoor educators. Together, they combine exercise, nature, and rigorous, personalized academics to expand minds and transform lives. A pilot semester during the spring of 2018 produced a number of positive learning outcomes and informed continued planning, revision, and updates. The next iteration of IAH is expected to launch in 2019.
Education & Adventure
Hale Reservation offers adventure and environmental awareness programs year round. Operating since 1976, our educational day programs are an excellent hands-on complement to school curricula while our adventure programs, offering high/low ropes courses and teambuilding activities, promote character development and improved interpersonal skills for groups of all ages.

Equity strategies
Last updated: 01/20/2023GuideStar partnered with Equity in the Center - an organization that works to shift mindsets, practices, and systems to increase racial equity - to create this section. Learn more
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
