What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Rachel's Table

Since 1992, Rachel's Table has been working to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste in Western Massachusetts. Six days a week, more than 200 volunteers collect food from local supermarkets, restaurants, caterers and bakeries, and deliver it to 43 agencies, including soup kitchens, food pantries, and shelters. Our agencies located throughout Western Mass. depend upon Rachel's Table as an ongoing source of nutritious, appealing, and culturally appropriate food. Rachel's Table is also a catalyst for community activism. Our volunteers come from varied backgrounds, religions and cultures, and range in age from teenagers to people in their nineties. In 2007, we initiated a gleaning program that provides students and other young volunteers with the opportunity to rescue thousands of pounds of nutritious produce from local farms. The volunteers bring the produce to the agencies, giving them the powerful experience of directly helping those in need.

Create a Jewish Legacy of Western Massachusetts was launched by the Jewish Endowment Foundation and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation in June 2008 as a simple but powerful program to help organizations secure legacy gifts in the form of bequests. The Federations of Western Massachusetts and the Berkshires are program partners, and a grant from the Jewish Federations of North America provides administrative support.

Nineteen (19) organizations have participated since the program's inception in 2008.

Teams of lay and professional leaders in each organization set goals for discussing Jewish legacy intentions with prospective donors who are asked to sign a Letter of Intent. The results are impressive. Since June 2008, 940 commitments from more than 634 households with an estimated value of $22,000,000 have been made to the nineteen program participants.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
