Mission

Farrington's mission is to enhance the well-being of low-income children through a connection with the natural world. Our 75 acres of woodlands, fields and ponds near Boston are dedicated to providing respite and inspiration for children who might not otherwise have this opportunity.

Farrington envisions a world in which every child has access to nature; every child learns that nature is a powerful source of health and happiness; and every child believes that stewardship of nature strengthens communities.

Summer Field Trips

Farrington Nature Linc uses nature as an outdoor classroom to help youth learn about the importance of spending time in green spaces for mental and physical health and well being. During single day field trips Nature Linc staff engage visiting youth in a wide variety of activities such as: ponding, gardening, feeding farm animals, identifying animal tracks, hiking, building forts, identifying plants and wildlife on scavenger hunts, and creating art from resources in the natural environment. These activities encourage children to observe, cooperate with others, think creatively, and gather information. This provides kids with a basic awareness and understanding of the natural world that they may not acquire from their city classrooms, homes, communities or in the media.

Economically disadvantaged people

For many years Farrington Nature Linc has employed staff from the same communities we serve to help provide our amazing summer field trip experiences. In 2020, for the first time, we hired our teens year round as part of our new Leadership in Nature Program. Staff still get to have the same fun summer experience of leading field trips, but now they will also get the opportunity to go on nature adventures of their own one Saturday a month. Larger outdoor adventures (kayaking, rock climbing, overnights in the White Mountains) happen along side teaching critical leadership and life skills side by side with nature exploration skills.

Population(s) Served

Farrington Nature Linc provides weekly nature connection programs as part of the Greater Boston area out of school time offerings. We currently work at 11 elementary schools across 4 communities (Boston, Cambridge, Somerville and Framingham). Nature Linc staff connect for one hour a week with the same cohort of elementary youth with curriculum that helps the youth connect to nature near where they live and go to school.
