What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

A countless number of cats and kittens are homeless, neglected and abused each year. Gifford Cat Shelter is working to end the struggle for these innocent animals by helping them to find their self confidence and most importantly - their furrever homes. Through behavior counseling and training (for both the cats and their humans), these cats find safe, nurturing homes where they can thrive.

Cat Sheltering & Adoption

Admission of homeless cats, provision of food, medication and care, and placement into permanent homes

Population(s) Served
Adults

Gifford Cat Shelter relies on active and committed volunteers to achieve our mission. Our Volunteer Program begins with an application. After orientation, volunteers are matched to activities that suit his/her interests and skills. Volunteer activities include Shelter cleaning and maintenance, yard work, socializing and caring for cats, special/fundraising event planning and execution, marketing, and community awareness events (e.g., tabling and adoption events).

Population(s) Served
Adults

The overwhelming majority of cat behavior problems can be fixed while the cat is still in their home, before they are either put outside or surrendered to a shelter.
This program teaches proven techniques for successfully keeping cats in their homes.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

At Gifford, cats are free to roam and play. They nap in sunny windows, get plenty of exercise, and enjoy tons of love and attention while they wait for their forever homes. A no-kill shelter, Gifford believes that all cats should have a chance to live their lives free of pain and fear. No matter their story, every Gifford cat has a future to look forward to. And until they find their new homes, they'll spend their days in bright, open environments, getting all the love they need!

By providing a safe, loving shelter where cats and kittens roam and play while they wait for forever homes. If a cat requires medical care or behavioral modification prior to their adoption, the needs are taken care of. Gifford has access to state of the art veterinarian care (both on and off site) to ensure the medical needs are addressed in a timely manner.

By working with the Boston community, Gifford personally interviews potential adopters to ensure we are providing for the needs of both the human and the cat/kitten. Taking the time to find the 'right fit' helps both adopters and adoptees feel comfortable during the adoption process. During open hours adopters have the opportunity to meet, interact and play or snuggle with the cats that are available for adoption. For the shyer cats it often is best to have a private appointment in a quiet environment where the cat's true personality can really shine. Once the cat/kitten is adopted, Gifford offers continued follow up support to help ensure a positive transition into their forever homes. Adopters are encouraged to call or visit with any questions or concerns that come up.

Gifford continues to evolve and grow to serve the needs of the local stray population as well as find loving homes for cats in other states where the cat population exceeds the available homes. Gifford will be improving our physical shelter through the generous donations of some committed donors which will enable us to help more cats and provide additional and enhanced services.
