Freedom Trail Foundation, Inc.

Boston, MA   |  http://www.thefreedomtrail.org

Mission

In 1951, local journalist William Schofield helped to form the Freedom Trail in order to make Boston's historic resources more accessible to the City's residents and visitors. In 1958, the 2.5-mile Trail was marked by a red-painted line.

Established in 1964, the Freedom Trail Foundation's mission is to market and help preserve the Trail and the 16 sites of the Freedom Trail. The Foundation promotes the Trail and the sites through its varied tours and extensive tour schedule, educational programs, and marketing and public relations efforts. The Freedom Trail Foundation Preservation Fund supports preservation, rehabilitation and capital projects for official Freedom Trail sites which help avoid, minimize or mitigate adverse effects of the elements and manmade wear and tear of precious 17th, 18th, and 19th century sites.

The Foundation helps to celebrate the story of the American Revolution and Boston history and to promote the Freedom Trail as the City's premier historic, cultural, and educational resource.

With over 4,000,000 Freedom Trail visitors each year, the Freedom Trail Foundation works with partners such as the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism, and the National Park Service to make the Trail accessible to residents of Boston and visitors from around the globe.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

People and Places offer free educational experiences, which introduce Boston's public school children to the city's history. Through pre-visit activities and hands-on programs, students see the past through the eyes of people from all walks of life and visit places in which memorable events occurred. Field trips help teachers implement the new Boston Curriculum Frameworks, not only in social studies, but also in language arts.

Since 1984, People and Places have provided programs for fourth and fifth grade classes from Boston schools. In 1998-99 People and Places opened participation to all elementary and middle school classes.

People and Places programs are available free of charge to classes from Boston Public Schools. During the summer, People and Places offers a teacher workshothe National Park Service, the Museum of Afro-American History, and the 16 sites along the Freedom Trail.
