Mission

DER’s mission is to champion the creation, circulation, and preservation of documentary film and media that amplifies underrepresented voices, and inspires understanding about people, cultures, and identities of the world. We address the need for tolerance and understanding of all people. This need is universal and more evident in today’s global political, social and cultural climate than ever before. Our distribution and production programs are informed by the conviction that documentary and ethnographic films can broaden and alter preconceptions of marginalized and underrepresented peoples. We also maintain an archive of historical significance and public interest.  Our programs reach millions of individuals each year via broadcast, film festivals and classrooms throughout the world.

Film Curation and Distribution

DER is a leading educational distributor and the only organization to specialize in ethnographic and anthropological films. Our collection includes seminal works in the history of ethnographic filmmaking, vérité and personal documentary, and other forms of experimental and non-fiction filmmaking. Our feature collections include: Art, Performance and Expression; Global Cultures; Indigenous Communities; and Ethnographic Classics. DER films are well-known and respected. We maintain a carefully curated collection and seek out films that reflect deep cultural knowledge, whether through research or the close collaboration of filmmaker and subjects, in their exploration of diverse cultural practices, beliefs, and forms of expression, and those that offer insights into the processes underlying social and cultural continuity and change. We are particularly interested in films that portray underrepresented voices or offer insight into unexplored areas of human cultural experiences.

Population(s) Served

We offer a robust menu of support services to media makers currently in production. Our major service is fiscal sponsorship, through which we are able to extend our non-profit status and offer fiscal oversight for projects. We are particularly interested in working with filmmakers who are producing innovative work that gives voice to those outside mainstream media. During the year DER may be managing or consulting on any one of over 40 documentary film or media projects in production.

Population(s) Served

Collectively, the films in the DER collection constitute an important visual record of cultures, traditions and identities around the world. For each film, we retain master materials, whether on film, tape or a digital file. As part of the Collections Management and Preservation Program we work to ensure long-term access to the films in our collection.

Unless we can record with film and tape the sights and sounds of their life, the world loses – and loses forever – part of the rich repertoire of the past on which we must depend to understand the future.

— Margaret Mead, 1969, “Introduction” Gardens of War

This work ranges from inventorying and storage of the film masters, working with archives that can provide proper physical storage of materials, maintaining important information about the films in the collection, and fundraising for preservation and digitization projects.
