Old Ironsides 1812 Discovery Center
The War of 1812 is both a defining moment in American history and the period of the Ship's greatest glory, when she won her most significant battles, earned her nickname Old Ironsides, and became a national symbol. On June 16, 2012 the USS Constitution Museum opened the hands-on, minds-on Old Ironsides 1812 Discovery Center. The Discovery Center engages ALL ages in conversation and exploration of USS CONSTITUTION and the War of 1812. The first person text, interactive elements, imagery, and family friendly programs all convey the theme, One Ship, One Crew, One Nation. The flexible program space provides for history spotlight presentations, interpretive programs, and family fun days. The Discovery Center serves as a learning lab for school programs for preschool through high school students. The Old Ironsides 1812 Discovery Center is the centerpiece for the Museum's commemoration the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 (2012-2015). Visit, Play, Learn.
A Sailor's Life for Me!
The Museum's engaging, online game A Sailor's Life for Me! [www.asailorslifeforme.org] invites intergenerational visitors to meet the men who lived and worked on board USS Constitution during the War of 1812. Visitors can join the crew, live the life of a sailor in 1812 and explore how 450 men lived and worked together in a small floating city. A Sailor's Life has games, family activities, and plenty of information for the curious or serious historian. The K-12 Educator Resources provide teachers with extensive and easily accessible tools for utilizing the A Sailor's Life for Me! website in the classroom. More than two-hundred lesson plans; activities; and downloadable worksheets, journals, primary source documents, and artifact images complement and enhance the other portals of the website: ""Sail to Victory,"" ""Explore 'Old Ironsides,'"" and ""Meet Your Shipmates.""

(2012-2015).The Museum provides innovative educational programming for nearly 25,000 students per year using ""Old Ironsides"" as a unique teaching medium. The programs are cross-disciplinary, incorporate 21st century skill development, and meet state and national curriculum standards. Teachers can choose a reserved facilitated program, customized history program, or self-guided exploration of our galleries to meet their students' needs. School programs engage students in a variety of methods from scientific theory to creative writing and public speaking to critical thinking about our nation's past. Our interactive galleries and trained educators provide exciting learning adventures for students of all ages. As one 5th grade teacher commented: ""When students see what I've been talking about in the classroom in real life - it's like the light bulb in their head turns on!""
Forest to Frigate
Forest to Frigate interprets CONSTITUTION's construction from the point of view of the people who designed, built, launched, and outfitted the Ship. The Museum's approach to exhibits is to tell the story through the people who were there and to engage visitors' hands and hearts as well as their heads. The Ship's construction and restoration make the perfect lens through which to explore key STEM principles within a historic context, exciting students and adults alike. Visitors experiment with the innovative techniques and design features that allowed CONSTITUTION to remain undefeated. They test the properties of different woods to learn how live oak gave ""Old Ironsides"" superior strength. Visitors can design their own virtual warship and test it against others in battle. Forest to Frigate takes visitors on a voyage of discovery, inspiring a greater understanding of the sheer ingenuity and human willpower that launched a legend.
