Programs and results
What we aim to solve
MASSPIRG is a consumer group that stands up to powerful interests whenever they threaten our health and safety, our financial security or our right to fully participate in our democratic society.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Transform Transportation
From the Berkshires to Cape Cod, affordable and reliable public transportation that grows with our transportation needs is key to the quality of life and economy in Massachusetts. Decreased traffic congestion and air pollution, reduced oil consumption, enhanced mobility choices, and economic growth are all benefits of mass transit.
Campaign for Zero Waste
In a throwaway society where air and water pollution threaten our health and environment, we need to reduce our use of resources, reuse what we can, and recycle the rest. MASSPIRG’s advocacy for reducing, reusing and recycling combines public education, corporate responsibility, legislation, regulations and consumer tools to reduce waste, conserve resources, promote recycling, and encourage a more sustainable society.
Consumer Protection
For more than 40 years, we’ve been educating consumers about how to protect themselves and their rights. We work to get dangerous products off store shelves, to end exploitative practices, and ensure a level playing field in the marketplace. And we advocate for new rules, institutions and policies to defend consumers from the economic and political power of special interests. Right now, our Watchdog team is focused on consumer threats from data breaches to dangerous toys.
Modernize the Vote
Registering to vote should be modern, accurate and automatic. That’s why MASSPIRG is working to modernize the vote by starting at the point of entry — registration — and passing and implementing policies like online, automatic and Election Day registration.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Since 1972, we’ve stood up for consumers, countering the influence of big banks, insurers, chemical manufacturers and other powerful special interests.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our team of researchers uncovers the facts; our staff bring our findings to the public, through the media as well as one-on-one interactions; and our advocates bring the voice of the public to the halls of power on behalf of consumers.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
MASSPIRG's Boston-based staff are experts in consumer protection, transportation policy, civic engagement, and more. In addition to decades of experience working in the State House, our advocates frequently appear in the media and work with allies around the state. Our campaign staff knock on tens of thousands of doors per year all over Massachusetts, educating the public about key campaigns and inviting them to take action.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In recent years, we have made real, tangible progress:
-After the massive Equifax data breach, we helped pass a bill in the State House to make credit freezes available to consumers free of charge.
-We've helped convince major companies such as McDonald's, KFC, Subway, and more to take action to prevent the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms.
-We helped win a bill in the State House for automatic voter registration in Massachusetts, which could help hundreds of thousands of Bay Staters participate in our democracy.
