Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Mohawk Music Association is made up of parents, community members and other friends working throughout the year to:
raise funds to help the music department
provide scholarships to graduating music students
purchase and maintain uniforms & performance attire
assist the music department in its activities
encourage youth and adult interest in music
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The MMA depends on volunteer help and always welcomes the involvement of new families and community members. Our two major annual fundraisers are selling baked potatoes at the Ashfield Fall Festival, and pies at the homecoming "Booster Day" football game.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Per our bylaws, six members must be present at a meeting for a quorum. Our board consists of a president, vice president, treasurer, recording secretary, public relations secretary, and webmaster. We also include two music instructors and district administration. Although we are a private entity, we work closely with the schools, staff, students, parents, and community members.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Following the retirement of a beloved teacher and a shift in the regional demographics in which the economy of Western Massachusetts made it difficult for families with school age children to reside here, the music and arts programs in our district schools saw a sharp decline in student participation. The MMA has worked very hard with the support of the community and school leadership to not only keep the programs going, but also grow in terms of quality, opportunities, and excitement. The students are responding and the momentum is growing rapidly.
