MASSACHUSETTS FARM ENERGY PROGRAM (MFEP) - FY'14BERKSHIRE-PIONEER RC&D PROVIDED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND/OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO DOZENS OF FARMERS IN FY'14 FROM ALL AGRICULTURAL SECTORS ACROSS THE STATE. THIS ASSISTANCE RESULTED IN INCREASED ON-FARM ENERGY CONSERVATION AND EFFICIENCY, PROMOTION OF RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR ON-FARM GENERATION, REDUCTION OF GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS, AND IMPROVED FARM VIABILITY BY PUTTING MONEY SAVED BACK INTO THE LOCAL ECONOMY. BPRC&D PROVIDED: 1) TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR ENERGY AUDITS, RENEWABLE ENERGY ASSESSMENTS, AND CONSULTATIONS, 2) PAID INCENTIVES FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF AUDIT RECOMMENDATIONS AND, 3) ASSISTED PRODUCERS AND AGRICULTURAL BUSINESSES IN LEVERAGING OTHER FINANCIAL RESOURCES FROM IMPLEMENTING THEIR ENERGY PROJECTS. OTHER ACTIVITIES INCLUDED: COMMUNITY FARM ENERGY INFORMATION SESSIONS HELD ACROSS THE STATE, MFEP WEBSITE MAINTENANCE, EMAIL AND PHONE ASSISTANCE, REFERRALS TO FEDERAL AND STATE GRANTS, INCLUDING GRANT WRITING SUPPORT FOR FARMERS APPLYING TO USDA'S RURAL ENERGY FOR AMERICA PROGRAM (REAP). DURING FISCAL YEAR 2014, BPRC&D ASSISTED WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF FARM ENERGY PROJECTS, RESULTING IN CONSIDERABLE ENERGY SAVED OR PRODUCED FROM RENEWABLE RESOURCES ANNUALLY, AND REDUCING GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS. AS PART OF THE MFEP PROGRAM, MASSACHUSETTS FARMERS SAVED OVER THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ANNUALLY FROM ENERGY UPGRADES, WITH FARMERS' INVESTMENT IN ENERGY PROJECTS PAYING OFF IN LESS THAN 2 YEARS ON AVERAGE WITH FUNDS LEVERAGED FROM PUBLIC UTILITIES, AND FEDERAL AND STATE SOURCES. THE MFEP PROGRAM WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE CENTER FOR ECOLOGICAL TECHNOLOGY IN EARLY 2014.
