STEVE GLIDDEN FOUNDATION

transforming tragedy into opportunity

aka SGF   |   Newton Centre, MA   |  www.stevegliddenfoundation.org

Mission

Founded in 2001, the all-volunteer Steve Glidden Foundation (SGF) provides summer camp scholarships for economically disadvantaged children who are homeless, refugees, or exposed to violence or abuse. SGF operates as a small, responsive, and flexible foundation that is all-volunteer, honest, and transparent. We minimize expenses by having no fixed office, no salaried staff, and by communicating primarily (and also infrequently) by email.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Steve Glidden Foundation Summer Camp Scholarship Program

Since it's founding in 2001, the all-volunteer SGF has disbursed more than $1.3 million in summer camp scholarships benefiting economically disadvantaged children who are refugees, or who have experienced domestic violence or homelessness. Prospective camps are identified, evaluated, and selected by each child’s parent/caregiver, advocate, or case worker – the people who are in the best position to choose the camp best suited to each child. After securing the best (discounted) rate possible for a given child, the agency or camp applies to SGF for “gap” funding to cover the remainder of the camp tuition. We work in close partnership with agencies and camps that have a proactive and established track record of helping children. Most of the camps we work with reduce their own rates in order to accommodate our “SGF campers.”
