Mission

Kuhn Employment Opportunities, Inc. is a non-profit human services organization committed to helping people with disabilities find and retain employment as well as participate in meaningful day support programs. From its humble beginnings in 1962 using Ernest B. Kuhn's small garage to serve a handful of young people, Kuhn has grown to approximately 450 participants who are supported in a variety of diverse programs. The agency provides person-centered program planning, job skill assessment opportunities, job development, on-the-job training and supervision, and transportation services to meet individual needs. Kuhn serves people with developmental, intellectual, and psychiatric disabilities in Meriden, Middletown, and the twenty surrounding towns. For more information, visit www.kuhngroup.org.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Over 275 people are served by Kuhn personnel on any given day through several different programs. Community employment services for persons with disabilities may be provided in group settings or individual job placement. Ongoing, follow along services are typically provided including job coaching and transportation. Kuhn Employment Opportunities maintains two small sheltered workshops for participants who do not want to work in the community. Local businesses subcontract work to us and participants are paid on a piece rate basis for work performed. Typical types of subcontracts are: packaging, assembly, mailings and recycling. Individuals with severe developmental disabilities and challenging behaviors who are mobile and generally non-verbal are served in Kuhn's Work and Community Experience Program. Our intensive staffing ratio affords participants the opportunity to participate in community-oriented activities, volunteer activities and to perform some piece rate work when able. Kuhn Vocational Services also include situational assessments, resume writing, job interviewing skills, job clubs and public transportation training. Kuhn has four offices serving over 700 people per year through out the state of Ct. Kuhn Employment Opportunities also operates 28 vehicles providing customized transportation services to help individuals get to and from their employment site. Kuhn has also established financial agreements with several other local non-profits to provide transportation services for their programs.
