Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Collegiate Development Program
The Collegiate Development Program focuses on college readiness preparation and leadership development for minority and Hispanic/Latino youth by undertaking the following activities:
College Mentoring
After School College Preparation and Skill Development Workshops
Youth Leadership Development
Service Learning, and
Community/Family Engagement.
The main goal of this program is to increase the number of minority students with access to higher education by supporting them through every step of the college admission process. This program seeks to meet the needs of underserved minority student population in the Danbury area by generating access to college preparation, financial literacy and planning, admissions' guidance, and leadership development. The Collegiate Development Program will provide students with the necessary information and tools to successfully complete the college admission process.
Civic Engagement and Integration (Pathway to Citizenship)
Preparing for the citizenship interview and passing the citizenship test is the goal of the Hispanic Center’s Citizenship Program. We make sure students know U.S. history and government, the Constitution, civics questions, dedicated written questions and questions in the N-400. Citizenship classes meet once a week and classes are ten weeks long. The core of the program is civic participation in community.
1. The Hispanic Center serves these services through:
• community integration for citizenship/civic engagement by providing outreach sessions inclusive of community presentations, workshops, community referrals and individual immigration consultations
• Facilitate civic engagement classes inclusive of ESL, Citizenship, Technology Literacy and a City of Danbury Citizens Government Academy.
• Provide Bilingual Case Management services to promote health/well-being/economic stability
• Civic participation, voter registration, volunteer mobilization & social/cultural exchanges.
The HCGD provides culturally and linguistically competent civic engagement and immigration case management. We are aware of the direct impact on immigrants due to the language barriers in agencies that lack the culturally and linguistic competence. This can affect the well-being of the broader community. Untreated illnesses and unsolved crimes can endanger public health and safety.
Immigration and Legal Services
The Hispanic Center of Greater Danbury has launched the Hispanic Immigrant Integration Project. The initiative will help to facilitate the integration of Latino immigrants into their communities. Families who qualify will be provided with application assistance for citizenship, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and family petitions.
The city of Danbury is undergoing a significant demographic evolution, resulting in a pressing need for communitywide planning and development in the delivery of comprehensive integration services. Demographic, economic, and social forces have continued to bring immigrants of all backgrounds to the City of Danbury, and their integration into the community remains a major issue that warrants attention.
This clearly highlights the need for affordable, accessible immigration services in the Danbury area.A substantial amount of our population are in various stages in the legalization pathway, and will require an array of services – ranging from DACA assistance, family-based petitions, and Citizenship assistance. Which the Hispanic Immigration Integration Project will enable the Center to provide.
ParentNet
The program has been designed to enable families to learn effective parenting skills that promote positive parent-child interaction. Through a series of programs and publications parents can identify various parenting styles, increase their understanding of the stages of child development, develop positive communication skills and practice effective discipline strategies to promote healthy families.
Case Management
The Hispanic Center of Greater Danbury, Inc. Case Management Program provides culturally and linguistically sensitive social services to the greater Danbury area. The focus of the program is to assist some of the City’s most marginalized populations with access to basic safety net services, including public preventive health education, creating access points for access to primary health care for the uninsured and under insured, enrolling eligible clients in the marketplace, educating them about the affordable care act, providing food assistance (i.e. access to SNAP and WIC benefits), applications for temporary family assistance program, child care, shelter and transportation. This will enable them to achieve and increase self-sufficiency.
