What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Homeless youth struggle to gain the self-awareness that can support their personal growth and the confidence they need to live independent lives, to see themselves in new ways. When working with children and families facing cancer and other serious illnesses, the disruption to the entire family can be overwhelming and intense. In both these instances, BIV believes that music can be a critical tool for strengthening and supporting these populations.

Concerts and Live Performance

Two public concert productions annually: a fall fundraiser celebration of our community and a Holiday concert featuring seasonal, gospel and spirituals.

Population(s) Served
Adults
Children and youth
Ethnic and racial groups
LGBTQ people

This monthly creative arts program offers an engaging curriculum for youth experiencing homelessness. Lessons range from singing, dancing, acting, spoken word, to writing, producing beats and much more. Each session allows for the "completion" of a new task or skill, designed to help them get in touch with their authentic voices, and build self-confidence.
Our diverse program Coordinators and Teaching Artists are handpicked from some of the most talented Broadway, TV/Film, and Musical Artists in NYC.
Prior to engaging with residents, our Coordinators undergo extensive preparation with us, followed by Armatus Training, a background check and onboarding with Covenant House Site staff. Coordinators must be prepared to support residents who might be identified during the session as needing additional support by Covenant House Staff.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

BIV’s mission is to build connection through the power of music: to transcend differences and empower audiences, communities and individuals in need to find hope, healing, strength and support.

By consistently delivering transformative and moving performances, our diverse professional choir inspires audiences to spread hope and healing.

Support and strengthen communities and individuals in need as they navigate traumatic journeys with engaging arts and education programs.

By harnessing the the talent of amazing Broadway artists, we can access and train a talent pool to deliver impactful programming that can support and strengthen the ability of these young people to overcome the trauma of their experience. Through partnerships with larger organizations, we can deploy our artists to develop and deliver exceptional programming to support the work they do.

Through our partnership with Covenant House, our work with homeless youth provides a critical outlet for self - expression, confidence building, and tools for resiliency. Our Teaching Artists reflect the populations they serve, which increases the effectiveness of the mentorship our programs provide.

And our connection with the children and families at Ronald McDonald House- NY facing a health crisis provides unique and individualized support to help them endure the disruptive challenge of life-threatening illness and painful treatments. We celebrate each child - not their trauma.

BIV has unique access to a vast resource of talent and generosity our TONY honored and GRAMMY awarded organization attracts. We are also a BIPOC led organization committed since it's inception to diversity and inclusion.

Our partnerships with major organizations allows our reach to extend into communities in need in and beyond New York City.

By the end of 2020, BIV's Outreach programs with Covenant House grew from 1 site in New York City, to 12 sites from coast to coast. And we have now extended our program with Ronald McDonald House from 5 weeks to year-round. Our transformative performances are reaching larger and larger audiences in the virtual and digital space, with our last virtual concert attracting 10,000 viewers.

Data
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
