WHITE WAVE’s FESTIVALS Project

WHITE WAVE’s FESTIVALS Project Overview

The primary vehicle WHITE WAVE uses to showcase emerging artists is its Festival Project, created in 2001. The first large-scale annual project in the series was the DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL (DDF), presented in conjunction with the d.u.m.b.o art under the bridge festival. Its programming enthralled overflow audiences in our John Ryan Theater and large outdoor crowds assembled at Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park (located between New York’s Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges). Encouraged by the public’s overwhelming response and the series’ critical acclaim, WHITE WAVE continually expanded its public programming.

The DDF became an annual tradition, growing in scale and achieving new heights of artistic quality with each passing year. In October 2017, the Festival’s resoundingly successful seventeenth edition showcased 73 companies and 393 performing artists to overflowing houses of dance fans. Currently, WHITE WAVE’s Festivals Project also includes two additional annual dance events: the WAVE RISING SERIES (WRS) and the SoloDuo Dance Festival. Audiences served by the Festivals Project include arts lovers of all ages, classes, and cultural backgrounds drawn to DUMBO, a vital New York cultural center. The local residents we serve include its artist community as well as the population of many new housing complexes sprouting up in the area. Our large-scale Festivals also draw residents from across the entire New York Metropolitan area, and serve as a magnet for tourists visiting the city from around the world.
