What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Education about mechanical music instruments

The Society defines automatic music instruments as including “musical boxes (instruments which play music via the plucking of teeth on a tuned steel comb through various mechanisms); musical automata; orchestrions; player and reproducing pianos and organs; phonographs; and self-playing stringed, wind, and percussion instruments of any kind.” It has a variety of programs for promoting the understanding and appreciation of automatic music instruments. These include:
• Lending Society owned machines to museums for public display and demonstration, currently including the following:

American Treasure Tours
Oaks, PA

Case Barlow Farm
Hudson, OH

Lake County Historical Society
Painesville, OH

Lockwood Mathews Mansion Museum
Norwalk, CT

Morris Museum
Morristown, NJ.

Musical Instrument Museum
Phoenix, AZ

Packard Museum
Warren, OK

• Public programs set up by our Special Exhibits Committee. Through these programs Society members demonstrate instruments in local communities, often in conjunction with community fairs and celebrations. Many of these functions include educational activities for children, such as hosting workshops where children make simple music boxes, as well as instrument demonstrations for people of all ages.
• Information about automatic music instruments publically available on the Society’s website at www.mbsi.org.
• Members of the Society can become more deeply engaged in the study and enjoyment of automatic music instruments through the Society’s bimonthly journal, Mechanical Music; through chapter meetings where members have the opportunity to view and hear instrument collections of other members and discuss them; and through a variety of workshops offered at chapter meetings and the Society’s annual meetings.
