Mission

Building for the Arts' mission is to expand access to the performing arts by providing creative space, learning opportunities, and hubs for artistic connection. Our three signature projects–Theatre Row, the American Playwriting Foundation and Music and the Brain–nurture artists, audiences, and youth with a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Theatre Row is an Off-Broadway multi-theater complex that serves as an affordable home for performing artist organizations and a lively, accessible venue for diverse audiences. The American Playwriting Foundation's Relentless Award is the largest cash prize for a new play. Music and the Brain brings music literacy curriculum and classroom keyboard instruction to schools with under-served students, helping them build cognitive and fine motor skills.

Music and the Brain (MATB) offers under-served public school students the tools to learn to read and play music through classroom keyboard instruction. Inspired by scientific and neurological research linking music and cognitive development, MATB is the experience of what research is now telling us. Music has a significant effect on the way our brains develop and function. When children receive sequential music instruction, it can impact their proficiency in language, reading, math and cognition.
