Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Racial and economic inequality continue to serve as barriers to the full participation of Asian Americans in our society. AALDEF seeks to address these problems through litigation, advocacy, education, and organizing.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Community Education
AALDEF educates Asian Americans about their legal rights through free legal advice clinics, educational presentations, ethnic media briefings, and social media.
Economic Justice
AALDEF seeks to ensure that Asian Americans are treated fairly in the workplace and provides legal representation to low-wage immigrant workers asserting their rights to minimum wage, overtime pay and safe working conditions. We litigate wage and hour cases on behalf of Asian American restaurant workers, delivery workers, home care attendants, garment workers, and residential building doormen.
Voting Rights and Democracy
AALDEF promotes civic participation in the Asian American community, especially among new citizens and first-time voters, and seeks to eliminate discriminatory barriers to the right to vote. We have won cases in Texas to remove barriers to voting for limited-English-proficient voters and advocated for changes in the Voting Rights Act.
Educational Equity
AALDEF provides legal assistance and legal rights information to Asian Americans facing hate violence in public schools and seeking equal educational opportunity in higher education.
Immigrant Access to Justice
AALDEF povides legal representation and community education to Asian immigrants and their families applying for U.S. citizenship, to individuals affected by post 9/11 civil liberties issues, and to Asian immigrant youth seeking Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
AALDEF promotes and protects the civil rights of Asian Americans. By combining llitigation, advocacy, education, and organizing, AALDEF works with Asian American communities across the country to secure human rights for all.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategies include:
1) educating Asian Americans about their legal rights through multilingual educational materials and other legal resources and free legal advice clinics
2) advocating for policies that address the problems of low-income Asian Americans and new immigrants;
3) providing legal resources to community-based organizations and facilitating grassroots community organizing efforts;
4) litigating cases that have major impacts on the Asian American community.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
AALDEF has a 14-person staff, including seven lawyers, who are assisted by over 300 volunteers, including pro bono attorneys, community workers, and students.
AALDEF receives financial support from foundations, corporations, individual donations, and special events.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have accomplished major legal victories on behalf of Asian American workers, tenants, trafficking survivors. There is greater public awareness about the myth of Asian Americans as a "model minority" and the need to address issues of poverty and discrimination against various Asian ethnic groups.
Unfortunately, we have also seen a roll back in civil rights and new executive actions and policies that discriminate against immigrants and communities of color. We are committed to using the legal system to enforce the civil rights of Asian Americans and all Americans and to work with community groups to educate individuals about their legal rights.
