What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
North Star Fund
North Star Fund brings together a community of New Yorkers who care about social justice, who combine our resources—money, skills and networks—to fund locally-grown movements for change.
As of December 31, 2021, North Star Fund has given out over $93 million in grants to just under 2,600 organizations. This includes over 8,000 grants made via donor-advised funds, our community funding committee process, and philanthropic partnerships.
Hudson Valley Grantmaking
As of summer 2021, we’ve awarded well over $2 million in grants in the Hudson Valley. Our Hudson Valley funding area includes a mix of rural, suburban and urban settings that provide unique opportunities to support grassroots organizing based in communities of color.
These grants are for groups organizing community members within at least one of the following counties: Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, Columbia, Greene, Delaware, Rensselaer, Albany, or Schoharie. See more at https://northstarfund.org/about/hudson-valley/
The Let Us Breathe Fund
The Let Us Breathe Fund is the only NYC-based fund led by and for Black activists organizing around police reform and building Black liberation. We started the Fund in 2015 following the death of Eric Garner at the hands of the NYPD. The Fund provided rapid response in that crisis moment and now supports the long-term leadership of Black New Yorkers fighting police violence and structural racism.
These grants are for groups based in the five boroughs of New York City or the Hudson Valley Region.

New York City Grantmaking
North Star Fund provides grants to organizations whose primary strategy is grassroots organizing. These grants, in the form of general operating support, are intended for both new and emerging organizations as well as established movement builders with a track record of success.
These grants are for organizations that are building community power in at least one of the five boroughs of New York City.

People Power Giving Project
North Star Fund is a proud member of a national Giving Project collaboration. The Giving Project is an innovative model that is being used by community funds across the country to expand our reach among diverse communities of donors and distribute more money to social justice movements.

Community Food Funders
Community Food Funders (CFF) supports the growth of an equitable, ecologically sound, and sustainable food system in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. CFF provides information, resources and networking opportunities for funders to invest strategically in growing, processing, and distributing food locally. CFF is not a grant-making entity, it is a network of philanthropic organizations and individual funders who are active in food system work.
