What we aim to solve
Building on the enduring heritage and values shared between the peoples of the Netherlands and the United States, the Netherland-America Foundation (NAF) seeks to further strengthen the bonds between our two countries through exchange in the arts, sciences, education, business and public affairs.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
NAF-Fulbright Fellowships
Awarded to Dutch and American students pursuing graduate level studies at universities in each other's countries.
Dutch2USA Internship Program
Through the Dutch2USA Internship Program, the Netherland-America Foundation provides funding for minority and economically disadvantaged Dutch students to pursue internships in the United States.
USA2Holland Internship Program
USA2Holland is a new internship program created by the Netherland-America Foundation (NAF) to enable high-achieving, motivated American college students to pursue an actual working internship within a company in the Netherlands. Candidates will be U.S. college sophomores or juniors who wish to dedicate a semester (4 to 6 months) to explore a career or professional area of interest with a strong international dimension. Candidates must integrate the internship with their personal academic planning contributing to the successful completion of their Bachelor’s degree.
Washington D.C. Internship Program
The Netherland-America Foundations offers internships in Washington D.C. by working with TFAS.
TFAS sponsors five summer institutes for undergraduate students in Washington, D.C:
Engalitcheff Institute on Comparative Political and Economic Systems (ICPES)
Institute on Political Journalism (IPJ)
Institute on Business and Government Affairs (IBGA)
Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service (IPVS)
Institute on Economics and International Affairs (IEIA)
These institutes prepare young people for leadership in the life of their communities and the nation by providing them with opportunities in the nation’s capital for enlightenment and enrichment.
NAF Friends Funds
Many Netherlands-based cultural, educational and charitable institutions (“Dutch Institutions”) seek to raise funds in the United States to support their mission. A major obstacle to such fundraising is that any gifts made by U.S. taxpayers directly to Dutch Institutions are not deductible for U.S. tax purposes.
The NAF has established a legal structure to facilitate cost-effective and tax-efficient cooperation in fundraising with Dutch Institutions. The Friends Fund Program gives U.S. donors the advantage of a U.S. income and gift tax deduction for their gifts.
Establishing an American Friends Fund with the NAF eliminates the need for creating and administering your own charitable organization in the U.S., while also saving expenses associated with accounting, auditing, legal counseling or filing annual tax returns.
NAF Cultural Grants
NAF Cultural Grants fund a wide range of exhibitions, performances, research and residencies for artists, promoting a high level of artistic and intellectual exchange between the United States and the Netherlands. Funding is provided for a cross section of projects—both traditional and contemporary—with geographic distribution spanning the United States and the Netherlands. Both emerging artists as well as established organizations are eligible. The NAF Cultural Committee is comprised of professionals in the various fields of art and design.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Founded in 1921, the Netherland-America Foundation (NAF) is the leading bilateral foundation focused on strengthening the bonds between the Netherlands and the United States. The NAF funds and manages high-impact programs in the arts, sciences, education, business and public affairs, and provides its members with access to a broad network of organizations and resources in both countries.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Netherland-America Foundation provides young people the opportunity for high-impact educational exchanges. The Netherland-America Foundation Fulbright Fellowshipprogram brings scholars from the Netherlands and the United States to the United States and the Netherlands respectively to pursue opportunities to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. The exchange between the two counties follows in the NAF’s mission of strengthening the ties between the two countries.
Through the Netherland-America Foundation Internship programs, including Dutch2USA, USA2Holland, and the Washington DC Internship Program, high-achieving students can pursue high quality internships spanning many industries – from business to medical to humanities – across the United States. In addition to providing a financial stipend for selected applicants, the NAF assists with obtaining an appropriate visa and, where possible, helps secure University credits for student applicants – thus providing students with the opportunity to pursue their professional aspirations in their host country. Two of these programs are particularly geared to serving low-income students.
The Foundation also provides interest-free student loans to eligible Dutch and America students enrolling in Advanced Studies (Post Baccalaureate) coursework or research at an accredited institution of higher learning in the United States or the Netherlands respectively.
The Netherland-America Foundation provides cultural grants in order to fund a wide range of exhibitions, performances, research and residencies for artists, promoting a high level of artistic and intellectual exchange between the United States and the Netherlands. Funding is provided for a cross section of projects—both traditional and contemporary—with geographic distribution spanning the United States and the Netherlands. Both emerging artists as well as established organizations are eligible.
In the field of business, the Foundation organizes the exchange of international business management information, experience and ideas between American professionals doing business in the Netherlands and Dutch professionals doing business in the United States.
The Foundation regularly organizes webinars, lectures, and other events to educate the public on all aspects of Dutch-American relations, ranging from history, culture, arts, politics, immigration, and much more.
Finally, the Foundation helps Dutch non-profits with their fundraising needs in the United States through its Friends Fund Program.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Day-to-day activities are run by an executive director and a small staff, in close consultation with an executive
committee of the board of directors. More than 150 volunteers serve on the board and standing
committees. Currently, 42 individuals serve on the NAF Board of Directors
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The Foundation provides dozens of fellowships, scholarships, and internships each year, and funds a myriad of cultural programs. It organizes regular webinars, lectures and events attracting a broad audience from across the United States and The Netherlands. It currently serves 40 Dutch non-profits with their fundraising needs in the United States.
