What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Program 1
Operated "The Roosevelt Island Visitor's Center KIOSK", which welcomes residents, visitors and tourists with knowledgeable staff, reference materials and aids to help them appreciate the Island's landmarks and history. Promotes Roosevelt Island as an interesting tourist stop by providing information regarding historical sites, food sources, and walking opportunities. The Center provdes benefit to all RI residents as well as non-resident visitors. 2023 days open: 252. Visitors: 35724. RIHS operates a gift shop within the Visitors Center, selling history books, and books and trinkets for the whole family in order to support Society Operations.
Program 2
During the Pandemic, the President/Historian created a mechanism to keep communications open and keep the community engaged with the Society. Called "From the Archives", this publication was researched, compiled and written by the Historian from Society Archives and public sources, with occasional guest contributions. Due to its popularity, the Historian has continued to produce it about 6 times a week. usually on a single topic each day regarding Roosevelt Island, New York City and State historical topics and other related topics of general interest such as arts, industry and architecture. It is distributed by an email distribution program each morning with very positive feedback. In 2023, the Society expanded it's presence on social media. With the assistance of a resident college student, the Society establish both Instagram and Tik Tok sites.
Program 3
President/Historian and Vice President research grant opportunities and prepare grant submissions and reports to the New York Community Trust which administers application and selection awardees of a Public Purpose Funding Grant for RI non-profits, and to New York City entities administering discretionary Funding from the New York City Council.
