Mission

Internationally recognized as a leading archive and exhibition venue for the moving image, the mission of Anthology Film Archives (AFA) is to preserve, present, and promote independent, avant-garde, and artist-made cinema. Beginning with its first public screenings in 1970, AFA remains a vitally important showcase for independent and avant-garde films. AFA’s exhibition program presents more than 1,100 public screenings in its two theaters for over 50,000 patrons each year. AFA’s preservation program maintains a collection of 20,000 films, 5,000 videos, and 2,000 audiotapes; and preserves dozens of films each year.

Film Screenings

Anthology's programming falls into several key categories: Essential Cinema, premieres and revivals, retrospectives and series, AFA preservations, and other special or unique performances and screenings.

Our programs bring a diverse array of films and audiences to our theaters. While our archive is dedicated primarily to avant-garde and experimental cinema, our programming includes international, rarely screened, and up-and-coming films. We take advantage of our East Village location whenever possible to bring artists, scholars, and performers in person to contextualize and present the works we show.

Essential Cinema is unique to Anthology, and represents 330 films organized into 110 programs, selected in the early 1970s by the organization's Film Selection Committee, consisting of filmmakers and scholars James Broughton, Ken Kelman, Peter Kubelka, P. Adams Sitney, and Jonas Mekas. Currently, every Essential Cinema program is screened on a repertory basis over the course of a year.

Population(s) Served

Anthology Film Archives may be best known to the public at large for our film exhibition program, but our extensive archival collections represent a crucially important part of our activities and mission. Anthology holds one of the world’s most extensive and invaluable collections of avant-garde films and videos, housing, protecting, and preserving works on 35mm, 16mm, and Regular- and Super-8mm film, and on various video formats, as well as film stills and audio recordings. And Anthology’s reference library boasts the world’s largest collection of paper materials relating to independent and experimental cinema, encompassing books, periodicals, documents, letters, manuscripts, and more. Taken together, these collections constitute an unparalleled treasure-trove of materials relating to avant-garde filmmaking, qualifying Anthology as one of the most important centers for the preservation and study of this realm of cinema.
