Neighborhood Development

Mika’s approach to neighborhood development is to support the leaders already living in the Shalimar Drive, Center Street, and Maple Avenue neighborhoods. Mika reaches out to residents and facilitates dialogue centered on identifying opportunities for change, while at the same time developing problem-solving and leadership skills. Mika organizes neighbors into Neighborhood Action Committees and provides a platform for these committees to articulate a shared vision, brainstorm solutions and implement results-driven strategies. Our goal is to develop residents who are committed to serving their neighborhoods; to enhance their capacity to design, fund, manage, and evaluate sustainable initiatives that will have a positive impact on their own neighborhoods; and to help build partnerships that increase the scope and sustainability of their programs. This process ensures that the residents have ownership of the progress achieved in their communities.

Population(s) Served

Mika Leadership Institute is an 18 month
leadership development program for adults, equipping them with the necessary
tools and resources to lead positive change in their community.

Population(s) Served

Mika's after-school program, El Paseo, means "the walk" or "the way" and serves Mika's K-6th grade
students through homework help, small group tutoring, recreational activities,
and mentoring.  El Paseo also includes a weekly teen youth group (Bible studies, worship, food, games) and Homework & Hangout (daily after-school homework help and mentoring).

Population(s) Served

Mika's English-language instruction, called Share Your English (SYE),  provides assistance to students in Mika’s target neighborhoods. The goal of Share Your English is for neighborhood leaders to read, write, and speak English at or above an 8th grade level. Mika uses a curriculum specifically designed for students with low primary language literacy, and as such meets the needs of our students. Share Your English meets weekly and students are organized into beginner, intermediate, early advanced and advanced groups to work on conversational English, phonics, writing, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and reading. Improvements in English communication skills will help enable parents to be positioned for higher levels of participation in NAC meetings, neighborhood development activities and in their children’s education.pasting

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Mika uses an Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach to accomplish our mission. This method of seeks to maximize a neighborhood’s existing resources. It is based on the belief that neighborhoods have a diverse mix of talented, passionate, & driven residents, capable of creating vibrant communities. These skilled residents, however, often lack the resources and connections to realize their potential. ABCD is an alternative to a more traditional needs-based approach, & rather than focusing on their deficiencies, this approach brings to light the many opportunities present in these low-income communities. Mika also serves as a bridge between the neighbors and resources outside their communities. Our goal is to develop neighborhood leaders, enhancing their capacity to effectively identify, design, fund, manage and evaluate projects and initiatives that support the shared goals of their communities.
