Mission

Our mission is to enrich, inspire, challenge, and expand every child's world through an arts-based education. Sweet Pea Cottage connects educators and youth with tradition bearers and artists from a wide range of traditions and disciplines; in doing so we demonstrate the importance of integrating the arts in education. We believe that the arts are powerful interdisciplinary tools that can teach learners at all levels.

Core Values
We believe in teaching through:

Art
We are dedicated to the philosophy that the arts are an integral component to a child’s total development. We aspire to create a multilingual, cross-cultural curriculum that celebrates the arts and the creative process. We employ teaching artists in our community to give the gift of their own experiences

Love
We believe that when each child is taught with love it creates the strongest foundation to communicate and encourages the child to find what they love to do.

Tradition
We value the process of handing down information, beliefs, and customs by word of mouth or by example from one generation to another. We honor cultural differences and celebrate them. It takes a village with helping hands to teach our heritage and traditions.

Community
We recognize and emphasize the inspiration, creativity and friendship a community brings to a child’s life. We explore the concentric circles that make the concept of community.

World Perspective
We consider it our responsibility to give a significant insight into the lives of children and their families all over the world. We explore and celebrate the world.

And in the end we discover laughter, individuality, positive choice making & a positive future; in short a garden of possibilities.

Preschool of the Arts

Sweet Pea Cottage Preschool of the Arts is an exciting and unique program designed to prepare each child with the skills needed to success in school and life through arts-based educational activities and experiences.

Highly qualified teaching artists utilize an original arts-based curriculum to support children's intuitive nature for creative play and exploration, and encourage a healthy relationship with the imagination while preparing students ages 2 1/2 - 6 years with the creative and critical thinking skills needed for kindergarten and beyond.

Through imaginative travel, our unique curriculum takes preschool students on a Passport Throughout the World where they focus on a different artist, flower, and shape each month and a different region, color, letter, and number each week. In support of our Passport Throughout the World, students experience weekly special guests such as working artists in the community, dancers, musicians, actors, and family and friends from the region they are currently studying.

Every child is capable of learning and we recognize that each child is unique in their development. Our preschool program strives to address the whole child and tailor individual instruction to each child's developmental needs.

Daily curriculum includes circle time with activities that include storytelling, puppetry, and other creative drama and interactive imaginative adventures; snack & lunch which often reflect the geographical location of study for the week; creative time activities include painting, sculpture, coloring, crafts, drawing, creative drama, dance, and movements; French & Spanish where letters, numbers, objects, and basic phrases are practiced using engaging visuals, songs, and drama; outdoor time is an opportunity for children to get outside to experience the community and all the beauty in nature; table toys provides small motor activities using water, puzzles, lacing, numbers, and more.

The curriculum also incorporates special weekly opportunities for students that include local field trips rich in arts & culture, yoga, foreign language, cooking class, theater, music, art, and dance.

To enhance experiences for our preschool students and to further support our goal of preparing children for school and life, Sweet Pea Cottage Preschool of the Arts incorporates the following programming into our curriculum:
Sweet Pea Collage is an original program to specifically meet the needs of our four and five year old students, designed to fully prepare each child socially, emotionally, and academically for the kindergarten experience. The foundation of the program focuses on teaching positive peer interactions and important character building values such as honesty, friendship, stewardship, responsibility, and perseverance as well as math skills and reading readiness.
Seeds of Empathy is a program designed to foster social and emotional competence and early literacy skills and attitudes in children three to five years old.

Based on the philosophy that arts are integral to each child's development, Sweet Pea Cottage has created a unique alternative to other public or private kindergarten programs. Our Kinder-Garden is a half-day program, currently available at our Queen Anne campus, that teaches subjects covering science, mathematics, and language through an art-based curriculum.

Taught by certified instructors, our kinder-garden aligns with Washington's Educational Learning Standards and prepares children with the skills needed to successfully enter elementary school.

Small class sizes allow students ages 5-6 years old to receive individualized attention in a supportive environment that will ensure long lasting academic success.

Field trip opportunities, outdoor exploration, and daily meals/snacks are also part of this unique kinder-garden experience.

Population(s) Served

Sweet Pea Nation's art camps provide arts-rich experiences for children entering kindergarten through third grade and are currently available at our Queen Anne and Sand Point campuses.

Let by professional teaching artists, art camps provide full-day opportunities for children to participate in activities that enhance their education during summer and school breaks. These unique camps are a way for children to explore diverse cultures, learn new and exciting skills, and experience all the Northwest has to offer.

SP Nation's art camps range from one day camps to weekly summer camps. Children learn and explore a variety of traditions, culture , and arts during each unique camp experience. Camps include experiences such as photography, cake decorating, exploring Seattle through an amazing race, and many others.

Summer camps incorporate weekly field trips and opportunities to cool off with a swim or a run in the Seattle Center fountain.

For children that want to participate but are a bit "wee, this is a great introduction to Sweet Pea Cottage.

For children ages fourteen to thirty months, our Pea Wee classes were developed to offer arts-rich experiences for children who are not quite old enough for preschool. Parents or caregivers attend Pea Wee classes with their children and participate in arts-based activities that support development. These active classes are fun for "Pea Wees" as well as provide opportunities for parents to meet other families in the community with children of the same age. Taught by Sweet Pea Cottage's Founder and Artistic Director, Pea Wees is a wonderful way to introduce young children to the Sweet Pea world. Classes meet weekly and sessions are offered quarterly at all three Sweet Pea Cottage campuses.

Pea Pods is the newest addition to Sweet Pea Cottage's arts-rich programming and was specially developed for children ages three to fourteen months and their parent or caregiver. This original program deepens the parent-child bond while parents learn about their infant's immerging personality.
Led by experienced staff, parents discover ways to enhance their baby's motor development with Baby Yoga & Braindance ™, increase their baby's curiosity about music, and provide other means of expressing emotions with baby sign language.

In collaboration with Seattle Public Schools, Sweet Pea Cottage offers after school theater classes for students in third through fifth grade. Lathyrus Theater is currently being offered at three Seattle Public Schools; Sacajawea Elementary, Bryant Elementary, and John Stanford International School.

Taught by Sweet Pea Cottage's working artists and educators, Lathyrus Theater promotes an inclusive environment that nurtures each child's talent, creativity, and unique voice. In this original theater class, children receive hands on education and experience with every aspect of theater production from beginning to end. With guidance from program leaders, students rehearse, construct, and perform a play in front of an audience of family, friends, and community.

Sweet Pea's talented working artists cultivate children's curiosity and encourage them to imagine the unimaginable while bringing special stories to life through various Theater for Young Children performances.

Family and community engagement play an important role in a child's educational and social development. Fun can be educational as well as entertaining and Sweet Pea Cottage strives to provide ways for families to have fun together while exploring the arts with their community neighbors.

Theater for Young Children are community events designed to create a comfortable and relaxed family atmosphere. Interactive performances provide opportunities for low cost family activities while exploring the arts in an environment that is fun for the entire family. Families are invited to bring a snack and blankets for a picnic while enjoying the show.

This family-friendly interactive theater experience incorporates teaching artists performing music, song, dance, art projects, and more which cultivate children's curiosity and encourages them to imagine the unimaginable. While our talented artists bring stories to life through their performances, children and families are also encouraged to participate through song, dance, and interaction with the performers. At the conclusion of the performance, families are invited to spend time with the performers while continuing to bring the story to life through a themed art project. Imagination doesn't end when the play is over; children continue using their imagination and creativity through play with the themed art project they take home with them.

Studios are extracurricular activities that offer families an opportunity to continue their child's exploration of the world outside of school hours. Eight-week studio sessions are currently offered quarterly at all three Sweet Pea Cottage campuses and provide opportunities for children ranging from three to five years old.

Extracurricular classes are taught by familiar faces to Sweet Pea Cottage students and families, our talented artists teachers, which creates an atmosphere that is comfortable and familiar. Classes include topics such as languages, theater, sports, music, and art.
