CROSBY FUND FOR HAITIAN EDUCATION INC

A scholarship fund: Because Education in Haiti is not free

aka The Crosby Fund   |   Old Lyme, CT   |  www.crosbyfund.org

Mission

The Crosby Fund is guided by the deep conviction that a brighter future for Haiti depends on educating its youth and preparing them for professional careers in Haiti. Less than half of Haitian families can afford school for their children, therefore, The Crosby Fund provides full scholarships for students from pre-k through university and offers additional academic support at our Education Center in Haiti’s Artibonite Valley.

Old Lyme’s ‘Crosby Fund for Haitian Education’ Changes Lives in One of Poorest Parts of Globe June 21, 2021 by Olwen Logan Leave a Comment The Crosby Fund for Haitian Education is guided by the deep conviction that a brighter future for Haiti depends on educating its youth and preparing them for professional careers in Haiti. How has an idea conceived in Old Lyme, Conn. been able to grow into an organization that is making a critical difference in the lives of more than 500 students in one of the most economically-deprived parts of the Caribbean island of Haiti, which, in turn, is one of the poorest countries in the world? The answer lies with one woman, Rebecca ‘Becky’ Crosby, who along with her husband Ted, founded the Crosby Fund for Haitian Education (CFHE) back in 2003. How did it all begin? What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Crosby Fund for Haitian Education is a scholarship granting organization that provides full scholarships and funding to over 500 students from pre-K through university in more than 80 schools across Haiti’s rural Artibonite Valley. After graduating from secondary school, our university students go on to attend colleges in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Many of our secondary school graduates go on to technical and vocational training at schools across Haiti. Upon receiving their degrees, The Crosby Fund then assists these graduates in securing internships and jobs across Haiti.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Primary and Secondary School Scholarship Program (Grades Pre-K - Philo -13th year)

We offer almost 400 scholarships for children in Pre-K to Philo. Students are selected based on their financial need and academic achievement (when applicable). We try to keep a gender balance and select students from different townships in the Artibonite Valley. Last year, 98% of our students advanced to the next grade. Students attend schools within walking distance of their home.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth
Economically disadvantaged people

Technical School Program offers a post-secondary education for students who were not selected to go to the university program. Professional Schools are in St. Marc, Gonaive and Port-au-Prince. We currently have almost 50 technical students studying nursing, primary school education, electro-mechanics, accounting, tele-communications, carpentry, plumbing and more.

From our high school graduates, we select our university students based on their academic record. All students go to Universities in Haiti, most are in Port-au_Prince. Our students receive bachelor degrees in nursing (R.N.), medicine (6 years), accounting, computer science, engineering, diplomacy and international study, business, management, and pharmacology. Students receive a living stipend. We have over 50 in the university program.

In 2017, we opened our Education Center to serve as our permanent home and to support education in the region. We offer tutoring for primary and secondary students, a computer lab, seminars for teachers and principals, and youth exchange programs, and summer camps.

55% of Haitian adults are illiterate. We offer 2 literacy programs a year in Haitian Kreyol for 120 students from ages 17-73. The program is taught by Haitian teachers, who have been trained by the Haitian government. The two-year program concludes with a graduation ceremony and a certificate.

At the heart of The Crosby Fund’s mission lies the deep conviction that a brighter future for Haiti depends upon educating its youth and preparing them for professional careers. To that end, The Crosby Fund has initiated the Career Development Program, a new CFHE program that helps fund new businesses and initiatives, run and operated by Crosby Fund graduates who have exhibited consistently high standards in their academic, personal and post-graduate lives. The Crosby Grant prioritizes initiatives designed to create jobs and serve their communities, and we consider the businesses and graduates to whom these funds are awarded to be the highest reflection of The Crosby Fund’s work and mission in Haiti.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Like many developing countries, Haiti lacks stability in nearly all areas of basic human need. Although The Crosby Fund has chosen to focus its work in education, it is impossible to operate in Haiti without recognizing other areas of chronic hardship, the gravest among these being widespread food insecurity. Current forecasts predict the situation to worsen. Problems on this scale require a unified approach, calling for organizations of all types to contribute their particular expertise and resources to a larger cause. The Crosby Fund believes that education and training impact all endeavors, and we will continue to align ourselves in this job-creating initiative with established partners working toward the mitigation of hunger and other fundamental areas of societal need, so that Crosby Fund sponsored agronomists, and nurses, and doctors, and graduates of all kinds can find employment, and put their training to use.

Continue to provide full scholarships to students from pre-K through University or Technical school and assist them in finding gainful employment post graduation.

For 14 years The Crosby Fund has been providing scholarships to over 500 students at over 80 schools in the Artibonite Valley and universities all over Port au Prince.

Thousands educated and employed.
