What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Street Sense Newspaper
The award-winning Street Sense publishes hard news, features, editorials, and art about homelessness, poverty, and related social issues. Half of the paper’s weekly content is contributed by artist/vendors, providing a unique platform for the expression of ideas, opinions, and artistic talent. Artist/vendors are paid for their published content. The editorial staff also runs the Homeless Crisis Reporting Project, which encourages and supports other newsrooms in covering homelessness and including people with lived experience in their reporting.
Case Management Program
In Street Sense Media's Case Management and Outreach Program (CMP), we work with men and women to navigate the often-complex bureaucracies toward permanent housing, employment, and physical and mental health care. Our highly personalized services are responsive to the needs of the individual as they are and their own goals for the future. The CMP team also goes into unhoused communities to provide check ins, offer support to people to pursue their goals, and invite people to become artist/vendors.
Artistic Workshops
Street Sense Media produces theater, photography, audio, illustration, and more, all for the purpose of providing economic opportunity for and amplifying the voices of people with lived experience of homelessness. Our innovative approach harnesses the abilities, aspirations, and hard work of men and women experiencing homelessness. We have long known that while housing and economic opportunity are distributed unevenly, talent and creativity are distributed without regard to income or housing status.
Vendor Program
Street Sense is sold by people currently or previously experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty in the D.C. metropolitan area. In addition to selling the newspaper as a means of low-barrier employment and income generation, artist/vendors contribute content, share their stories, and breakdown stereotypes.
