What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Rescue, Foster and Adoption
Cat's Cradle rescues approximately 700 cats each year from kill/at risk shelters, as space in foster homes permits. On arrival at Cat's Cradle, cats and kittens receive a health assessment and we address their medical needs in preparation for adoption. We take in cats with special medical needs and conduct special fundraising to cover extraordinary expenses, so that we can give as many animals as possible a chance at a forever home. All of our cats are fully vetted and spayed/neutered before adoption, whether the adoption is local or through transportation to one of our no-kill partner organizations. Local adoptions occur through showings at our Harrisonburg Center, and at regional Petsmart stores, as well as at special events and venues. Our adoptable cats and kittens can be seen on our website at www.catscradleva.org.
Pet Retention
Cat's Cradle provides a variety of services to cat owners to help pets stay in their homes, reducing the rate of owner surrender at area shelters, thereby reducing the numbers of at risk animals euthanized. We provide behavioral counseling to help pet owners resolve issues that might otherwise cause them to surrender their cat. We also provide financial assistance with medical expenses, short-term pet food assistance, and financial assistance with short-term boarding for pet owners facing hospitalization, domestic violence, or eviction from housing where they can keep their cat(s). Finally, we offer help and resources for people seeking to rehome their cat(s) safely on their own.
Spay Neuter Financial Assistance
Cat's Cradle operates one of the largest spay/neuter assistance programs in Virginia. Partnering with the Anicira Veterinary Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia, we annually provide assistance for surgeries and rabies vaccines for over 1500 cats and kittens in our service area. Every cat and kitten in our care is sterilized prior to adoption. We operate a trap-neuter-return program that provides hands-on trapping and transportation, and that trains volunteers to trap and transport feral cats. We intervene in areas with colonies of feral cats to educate owners and neighbors about TNR.
