What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Poor Animals Welfare and Surgical Fund

This fund was established to pay the medical bills for injured pets in the care of the P.W. County Animal Shelter, to assure they get the treatment they need, the time to recover, and the new forever home they so deserve. This fund has saved the lives of over 90 precious pets and helped them live happy and healthy lives with their new families.

Population(s) Served

This very popular half price adoption program places adoptable pets over 6 years old with pet lovers over 60 years old. Research shows that pets provide innumerable health, social and other benefits to the elderly. To date, we have placed over 130 senior pets in forever loving senior homes.

Population(s) Served
Seniors

The purpose of this program is to preserve the loving bond between pet owners and pets, reduce shelter intake, and prevent pet homelessness. Pet relinquishment is a solvable problem and we want to be the driving force in the community behind the solution. Currently, there is no consolidated or unified pet retention program in Prince William County. Efforts throughout the county are well intended but unsynchronized. Over 40% of homeless animals are owner surrenders and the County has a 20% return rate on dogs adopted out, primarily due to changes in financial situations and behavioral issues.
o Owner surrenders are typically associated with 4 factors: Money, Time, Behavioral Issues, and/or Housing issues
o We help maintain a food bank for low-income pet owners and provide a one-month supply of food as well as information on available resources as part of adoption starter kits.
o Our program also provides website resources and animal behaviorist & trainer referrals to offer recommendations to help keep pets in their homes and prevent future surrender.
o We strive to be the resource of choice for adopting families to ensure these loving pets are successful in their new homes.

Prince William Humane Society has served the people and pets of Prince William County VA since 2012 and has recently created the Homeless Animals Support Network to expand its impact throughout Virginia. The mission of this program is to strengthen the human/animal bond by helping keep owned pets in their homes with their loving families and protect and assist the most vulnerable lives who do have to enter shelter environments. All with the ultimate goal of taking Virginia to a No-Kill society in the near future. We do this by:
• Increasing our reach of the Poor Animals Welfare and Surgical (PAWS) Fund to support the care of injured and sick animals who enter shelters and rescues throughout the state of Virginia.
• Strengthening our Fur-ever Together program to keep animals out of shelters by working with rescues and outreach groups to assist pet owners to keep pets with their people and in loving homes.
• Using the PWHS's social media and web presence to shine a light on affiliate partner rescues, their adoptable pets, and other pet-related content, all with the aim of increasing adoptions and saving more lives.
• Providing grants to small animal rescue organizations throughout Virginia that choose to become a HASN partner and who demonstrate the financial need and have a program that supports this mission.
