Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

HIV Education

Our respected Peer to Peer education program is proving highly successful in both the public and private school system, in motivating young people to take an interest in their health. Medical students from Mérida and interns from all over the world facilitate workshops in both middle and high schools, focusing on empowerment, living a healthy lifestyle, avoiding teenage pregnancies, and the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

Our local Mexican volunteers, including medical students, are then trained to teach the workshops themselves. Dr. Cabrera also collects data to better understand the true impact of HIV/AIDS in the area. Our success has created a growing demand for our educational programs. See how we help prevent HIV through testing.

Population(s) Served

In collaboration with other institutions and non profit organizations, we hold regular free HIV testing events, including pre and post counselling, with a team of professional and trained volunteers. In June 2015 we visited Isla Mujeres at the invitation of the Mayor and the town council. Statisically an HIV positive person who does not know their status, passes the virus on to 3 other people in the first year, before they are detected. This means that potentially up to 2,000 people are prevented from acquiring it over 3 years for just one person detected.

This is why testing is so important in helping with the fight against HIV. Once someone is detected they are immediately linked to care and offered the possibility to access our psychotherapy and nutrition programs More details at care. If you would like an HIV test, free and in complete confidence, contact us.

Population(s) Served

We have established extensive contacts for our HIV+ clients with HIV specialists in the Yucatán. These include the Health Department, and IMSS and ISSSTE, who together cover the medical care of more than 90% of the HIV+ population. Our Director General, Dr. Carlos Cabrera, being an HIV specialist himself, is always available for advice, as well as supervising their medical, psychological and nutritional status, and their overall care. We provide all our services free of charge and if you are worried that you might have been exposed to the virus and would like a free HIV test,

How would you cope with being HIV positive? "We are not birds...but we have wings" was written from the heart by a member of our self help group.

Population(s) Served

We believe that as part of the holistic approach of treating HIV, offering clients the possibility to be part of a therapeutic group is essential. We have established a psychotherapy program with both one-on-one and group sessions. Here we help our clients come to terms with their situation and also to understand the importance of adherence to their anti-retroviral therapy, attending all their medical and lab appointments.

Population(s) Served

Not only do we detect people who are HIV positive, we also follow them up with trained counselors. They establish a relationship, linking them to a treatment program, helping them with attending a clinic, seeing a physician, getting their lab work done, and making sure that they have a medical plan. Treatment is also prevention, preventing future transmission and the appearence of opportunistic infections and the development of AIDS, and above all, saving lives.

Population(s) Served

Due to the nature of the disease and the way it compromises the immune system, the body can suffer from malnutrition. Additionally, the anti-retroviral therapy often has side effects, affecting the metabolism, so it's important that qualified nutritionists participate in the clinical care of our HIV+ clients in order to educate and treat the related nutritional conditions. We are very proud to offer one of the most professional and innovative programs with qualified professionals who provide free nutrition consultations to all our clients.
