Programs and results

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

ALF works in two areas: Community Development and Education. We recognize that there is a lack of quality and affordable homeownership opportunities for low-income Hondurans, and that the youth of Honduras struggle to enter the workforce due to limited access to quality education.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Community Development

Our community initiatives aim to establish a stronger foundation for local communities, improve well-being and create sustainable futures for island residents in Roatán, Honduras.

Our flagship community program is the Los Sueños: The Dreams -- a master planned community in the Bay Islands designed to provide affordable home ownership and community spaces to local island residents. We also have a community library with a broad range of educational programs and a community park on the property, both available to the broader community.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Through our education programs we’re creating new opportunities for eager students, raising up future leaders and transforming the educational climate.

Our educational initiatives include a Bilingual Literacy Program, a scholarship program, and infrastructure projects to support schools and learners.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We aim to create opportunities for hondurans to access affordable housing and quality education. Our goals within the next five years are to complete a 70-home dignified affordable housing community with a broad range of wrap-around services (school, church, park, library) and to provide educational opportunities to young hondurans that include bilingual literacy training, educational scholarships and life-skills training. Operationally, we will broaden our donor base, strengthen our staff, and increase our program monitoring and evaluation to develop the necessary infrastructure for our anticipated growth.

Our 5-year strategic plan outlines a broad range of activities that will occur to successfully achieve our goals. Below is a list of our strategies that will guide us toward success. Each of these strategies has a detailed implementation strategy and timeline.

1. Develop housing communities that are sensitive to new and existing residents that promote positive environments
2. Implement educational programming that supports literacy, conservation, and life skills development
3. Implement and train on a project management software
4. Develop standardized program selection process and implementation tools
5. Develop Monitoring and Evaluation, and Reporting Plan
6. Develop a robust grant management system
7. Strengthen the board of directors in order to enhance ALF’s Success
8. Build and implement staffing structure to support ALF operations
9. Develop policies and procedures necessary to support ALF operations
10. Strengthen ALF’s image within local and national markets
11. Enhance donor communication channels
12. Increase our investments and program revenue to enhance self-sufficiency
13. Secure grant-funding to support programs
14. Increase unrestricted funds to ensure administrative success

ALF has a robust Honduran team, which includes a program manager dedicated to seeing our programs operate at the highest level and utilizing modern project management and monitoring and evaluation systems. We have a growing network of supporters with strong corporate and foundation partnerships, including multiple Honduran corporate partners.
Our commitment to the people of Roatn is foundational in our vision for the future. ALFs model for dignified and affordable housing communities has the potential to create long-term impact. We have the experience to complete our strategic plan, the team in place, the expertise and physical assets, and the broad network of support. The stage is set for our successful implementation of our strategic plan.

In 2023, we successfully implemented a range of educational and community programs, generating a significant impact on the surrounding communities. Some of our accomplishments in 2023 are as follows:

- 10 new families moved into their homes, for a total of 14 families in our affordable housing community
- 182 students successfully completed their annual literacy training
- 7 students received scholarships to attend private high school or university
- 4 local schools received over $5000 worth of materials and school supplies

-12 community events were held at the ALF facilities
- 8000+ people were served through our library and computer lab
