What we aim to solve
We work to positively impact on those in our community by assisting veterans and addressing their issues, by assisting local youth and charitable organizations, and by setting an example for others to emulate by accomplishing our objectives through teamwork.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Toys for Tots Program
The mission of the Outer Banks Detachment's Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys each year, and to distribute them as Christmas gifts to needy children in Dare County. The program serves to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, and patriotic citizens. To that end, the program's objectives are threefold:
1. To help less fortunate children in our community experience the joy of Christmas;
2. To play an active role in the development of our community's most valuable resource—our children, and;
3. To unite our community towards a common cause each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign.
The Outer Banks Detachment's Toys for Tots campaign takes place each year during the months of November and December. It has become a very popular event for the members of our detachment and has a proven record of being a worthwhile program to the children of Dare and Currituck Counties.
Marine In Need Program
As Marines, we received training from our first day of service to always remain faithful to our God, Country, and Corps. This belief is expressed in the motto of the Marine Corps, "Semper Fidelis," which means "Always Faithful." As Marines, we accept that belief and strive to "take care of our own.".
From time to time we learn of a local Marine in need of assistance, and true to our belief, we provide assistance to that Marine as needed. Whether the cause for the needed assistance is the result of a family crisis, a medical issue, unemployment, or some other reason, it is irrelevant to us. The only consideration is that a fellow-Marine is in need and requires our assistance.
Since our establishment in late 2006, the Marine Corps League Outer Banks Detachment has remained true to our commitment to "take care of our own" by offering assistance needed to our local Marines and veterans from other branches of the armed-forces.
We simply ask that should you know of a local Marine or veteran in need of assistance, that you please make us aware of that need.
Scholarship Program
The Marine Corps League Outer Banks Detachment provides an annual $500 citizenship scholarship to graduating students from each of Dare County's three high schools.
To be eligible, students must be graduating from Cape Hatteras Secondary School, First Flight High School, or Manteo High School during the year in which they are nominated. Nominations and the selection of one scholarship recipient for each school are to be performed by the respective high school's administrative, guidance, and teaching staff.
The nomination and selection of scholarship recipients is to be based solely on the candidate's record of service to the Outer Banks community. Examples of such service include: Volunteer service to the candidate's school; volunteer service to community organizations or projects; individual self-directed projects for the betterment of the community, and; other projects or accomplishments deserving of special recognition. A candidate's academic or class standing is not a consideration for selecting the scholarship recipients.
Following selection, each recipient will be presented with a suitable certificate and the scholarship proceeds by a member of the Marine Corps League Outer Banks Detachment at their respective school's graduating class awards ceremony.
Eagle Scout Recognition Program
The Marine Corps League and the Outer Banks Detachment wholeheartedly supports the Boy Scouts of America by virtue of their promotion of traditional family values to America’s youth.
Every scout who reaches the rank of Eagle Scout is presented a citizenship award by our detachment on behalf of the Marine Corps League. The presentation ceremony is usually held in conjunction with his local troop's Court of Honor ceremony.
To initiate recognition by the detachment, the supporting Boy Scout Troop should simply contact us and provide us with the necessary information so a detachment member can make the presentation of a Good Citizenship Award certificate.
Adopt-A-Beach Program
Members of the Outer Banks Detachment are participants in the Surfrider Foundation's Adopt-A-Beach program and are responsible for cleanup and maintenance activities at the West Third Street Estuarine Access in Kill Devil Hills. Our detachment members have once again committed to giving back to our community and making it a better place through participation in this program.
Citizen Recognition Program
The Outer Banks Detachment presents a Certificate of Appreciation to the citizens of our community to recognize meritorious deeds or acts that demonstrate loyalty and patriotism to our country or to extend thanks to those who provide support to our detachment and its mission.
Although our members remain vigilant for such acts and deeds, we welcome anyone who takes notice of a noteworthy action to contact us with their recommendation.
Flag Display Recognition Program
The Outer Banks Detachment presents Certificate of Appreciation to citizens of our community to recognize the proper and public display of our nation’s flag. Along with this certificate, a new 3-foot by 5-foot national flag is also presented as the recipient has demonstrated, by example, that it will be honorably displayed in the future.
Should you know of anyone who you feel may be deserving of such recognition, please feel free contact us with your recommendation.
President's Volunteer Service Award Program
As the first certifying organization in eastern North Carolina authorized to present this nationally recognized award, our detachment recognizes those who perform volunteer service to our community with a certificate, medallion, and a congratulatory letter from the President of the United States.
