What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the nation's leading professional association dedicated to increasing patient access to affordable medicines, improving health outcomes and ensuring the wise use of health care dollars. Through evidence- and value-based strategies and practices, the 8,000 pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and other practitioners belonging to AMCP manage medication therapies for the 270 million Americans served by health plans, pharmacy benefit management firms, emerging care models and government.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Managed Care Summer Internships for Student Pharmacists

The AMCP Foundation partners with pharmaceutical manufacturers and health plans to offer summer internships in managed care and health outcomes research across the nation each year.

The P&T Competition was created to introduce student pharmacists to the skills necessary for effective formulary review and management. By participating in the P&T Competition, student pharmacists gain experience in gathering and critically analyzing scientific, clinical, and economic evidence in a systematic and rigorous fashion. They also hone written and oral communication skills that are increasingly important in today’s health care environment.

The AMCP Foundation Best Poster Award is given annually to the student pharmacist, resident or fellow, and graduate student with the most outstanding poster. The competition is divided into three categories: Student Pharmacists, Residents or Fellows, and Graduate Students. Student/Resident/Fellow/Graduate Student Posters may be submitted by pharmacy students enrolled in a Doctor of Pharmacy degree program, pharmacy residents, pharmacists completing postdoctoral fellowships or students completing a graduate program. Posters submitted under the Student (Non-Reviewed) option, are eligible to compete for the Best Poster Award.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The AMCP Foundation aims to advance the quality and affordability of our health care system by promoting the application of medication-related research and education. We focus our efforts on being patient-centered, credible, transparent, collaborative, and innovative. Altogether, we promise to contribute to the efforts to improve health outcomes in our nation by developing managed care pharmacy leaders through immersive education and research on the evolving health care environment.

The AMCP Foundation operates in alignment with the 2018-2020 AMCP Foundation Strategic Plan. We plan to facilitate research through our "Best Poster" competition at our annual meeting, host a research fellowship, and continue facilitating an annual Research Symposium at our Fall Nexus meeting. In order to promote our missions goal of "immersive education", we plan to expand the student P&T Competition, student pharmacist scholarships, residencies and fellowships, web-based resources, and prove that we have added value for faculty members as well.

We plan to accomplish our goals by remaining future-oriented, patient-centered, and balanced by engaging with the community and diverse stakeholders and collaborators in industry. We will build on our robust legacy of medication-related research and education.

Some of our accomplishments include:
-Development of the nationally recognized P&T Competition, providing student teams a fun and prestigious way to learn effective, evidence-based pharmaceutical evaluation since 2000.
-Our organization celebrated 25 years of immersive education through various summer internships nationwide in 2018. Nearly 200 student pharmacists have gained exposure to real world managed care operations, health outcomes research projects, and more. Student internships conducted since 1993, providing more than 200 pharmacy students exposure to real-world managed care pharmacy practice and operations.
-Annual Research Symposia held as AMCP Nexus preconference series since 2010, plus Leadership Meetings, Learning Institutes and other gatherings.
-Launch of the Best Poster Competition for student pharmacists in 2002, with subsequent expansions to recognize residents, fellows, graduate students and senior investigators.
-Recognizing sustained leadership and contribution to managed care pharmacy through the Steven G. Avey Award, presented since 2001.
- In 2014, we released the findings of our research project to identify and assess the impact of the rapidly changing dynamics of the US health care system. The project outlined the top 10 emerging health care trends expected to have a significant impact on managed care pharmacy organizations. Following the initial release of this report, we have provided "bridge" articles, to discuss the realities and implications of our changing healthcare environment as predicted. We are in the process of conducting research for our second version of the "Top 10 Emerging Health Care Trends" with the hopes of publication later this year.
-Led a consortium that established the unprecedented AMCP Framework for Quality Drug Therapy, bridging the gap between the status quo and ideal drug therapy.

Some of the important topics and trends we have tackled include:
-Health care trends and implications for stakeholders such as patients, providers, payers and pharmaceuticals.
-Value-based health care and the role of pharmaceuticals.
-Pharmacy literacy to improve adherence.
-Specialty pharmacy.
-Value of medicines to build understanding of managed care pharmacy principles.
-Medication therapy management and quality of care.
