What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Celebration of Black Writing

Celebration of Black Writing is a year-round celebration culminating in a week-long festival, the only festival of its kind in the country.

Population(s) Served

Each year, Art Sanctuary chooses an artistic project or theme for the program.  The curriculum for RIC changes each year depending on the artist and work selected and has had at its core the work of writers, playwrights, and a music composer. For the 2012-2013 program year RIC will use Art Sanctuary’s Hip H’opera curriculum written by educator/scholars with expertise on the subject of hip hop and opera. The goal is to inspire young people to understand the relationship between hip hop and opera. Also, to embrace the power of these musical genres in capturing narratives that may be similar to what they are experiencing in their lives. If they do not see narratives that are not similar to their life story the goal of the 6 week program is to inspire them to write their story in whatever artistic form.

Population(s) Served

Art Sanctuary places featured and nationally-acclaimed authors and other artists in the classroom at up to 10 schools during the school year including those connected to our annual Celebration of Black Writing in May and June.  Typically the program reaches inner-city schools with a predominately African American and economically disadvantaged population and where students may be disconnected from their studies and benefit from direct contact with an author whose work they may be reading.
