Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Zhang Sah is an independent nonprofit organization that provides character, cultural, physical and academic development and education in conjunction with multidisciplinary martial arts programs. Zhang Sah supports the mental and physical health and well-being of its members by offering them tools for resiliency
and discovery along with black-belt training, age-appropriate martial arts training, character education, and scientific and philosophical teaching. Within these offerings, Zhang Sah supports working families with its structured programs that provide educational development for children, youth and adults
Zhang Sah School goal’s embody the continuation of Zhang Sah Martial Arts and Learning Centers 25 years of continued practice of individual and community improvement.
Zhang Sah goals include teaching and instilling the following values within each individual student and family who attends;
Courtesy - the showing of politeness in one's attitude and behavior toward others
Humility - a modest or low view of one's own importance; humbleness
Integrity - 1. the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. 2. the
state of being whole and undivided.
Perseverance - persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.
Self Control - the ability to control oneself, in particular one's emotions and desires or the expression
of them in one's behavior, especially in difficult situations.
Indomitable Spirit - impossible to subdue or defeat

Benevolence - the quality of being well meaning; kindness
To educate the body and to strengthen the mind requires special attention to the lives of our students and goes beyond classes, passing tests, and earning rank. Individuals who study at Zhang Sah have chosen to do so not only as a way to attain/maintain physical fitness or build/refine techniques, but to perfect their character through experiencing new and balanced ways of being and approaching life.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
1) Youth and Adult Programming
Zhang Sah does what cant happen or doesn't happen in school. We make learning relevant and rigorous. Our programs operate 12 months a year in order to support working parents. Zhang Sah engages in a holistic educational approach.
2) Accessibility
Zhang Sah partners with long term mission aligned sustainable funding sources that make our program and benefits available to the public with minimal financial barriers
3) Community Engagement
Zhang Sah partners and collaborates with local and state government, education, sport, and social service stakeholders in the community
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Zhang Sah possesses the ideas, talent, and drive to achieve these goals. However the financial resources needed to perform needs to be augmented by supporters.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Zhang Sah is the only organization of its kind in the USA
We have mastered combining child care and academic education with martial arts. We have been able to sustain this work since 1997, for twenty years. The program model have brought innovative ways to engage school children in their classwork in ways that don't feel like school to them. We are supporting kids to engage in a healthy lifestyle in mind and body.
We haven't developed a strong social media, fundraising, capital needs plans. The board needs new leadership and direction that is not partial to the founder. The organization must be prepared to embrace the next cycle with 2nd generation leadership.

- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
