What we aim to solve
Many of the world’s most pressing challenges require innovations in engineering. The need for engineers, STEM professionals, and engineering students is increasing globally, as important work for technologists increases. Consider these facts: 1) more than half of the population cannot access the Internet; 2) more than one-third of the world’s population do not have access to adequate sanitation; and 3) more than 1 billion people have no access to electrical power. These challenges are daunting and solvable, with the IEEE committed to playing a full role.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
ILLUMINATE the Possibilities of Technology by Using it to Address Global Challenges
Technology is a propelling force that makes it possible to take action. It allows us to ask previously unimaginable questions and find solutions to unsolved problems. IEEE programs such as Smart Village, EPICS in IEEE, SIGHT, Empower a Billion Lives and MOVE, engage members, volunteers and students in conceptualizing and delivering technological solutions that positively impact lives world-wide.
EDUCATE the Next Generation of Innovators and Engineers
The future of technology depends upon the nourishment of brilliant minds, the creation of opportunities, and the cultivation of a generation of socially responsible technology professionals. IEEE programs such as PES Scholarship Plus, TryEngineering, IEEE REACH and IEEE Science Kits for Public Libraries are designed to provide educational opportunities for pre-university students, university students and young professionals worldwide.
ENGAGE a Wider Audience in Appreciating Engineering and Technology.
The pace of technological advancement is accelerating. Driving a greater understanding of how science and technology impacts society enables us to value the past, meet the needs of today, and create the world of tomorrow. Programs include the IEEE History Center and Life Members Committee.
ENERGIZE innovation by Celebrating Technological Excellence
Technological innovation pushes the boundaries of thinking, breaks new ground and improves lives. IEEE programs including IEEE Awards and IEEE-HKN recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of technologists and students worldwide.
FUTURE looks beyond our lifetime to shape the destiny of future generations
Ensuring future generations have sufficient and appropriate educational and inspirational programs and services to lay the foundation now, establishing the future we envision and desire. IEEE programs include Women in Engineering and the IEEE Foundation Fund.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Enable donors to invest in IEEE program that:
Illuminate the possibilities of technology by using it to address global challenges
Educate the next generation of innovators and engineers
Engage a wider audience in appreciating the value and importance of engineering and technology
Energize innovation by celebrating technological excellence
Future looks beyond our lifetime to shape the destiny of future generations
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization for the advancement of technology, has identified a number of strategically important initiatives that will help meet the pressing global outlined in the programs area.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
As one of the largest and most respected global voices for engineering, IEEE plays an important role in education, job creation, economic development, innovation, the environment, and improving lives across the developing world.
Consider these facts: - IEEE:
Leverages its 400,000+ members worldwide including captains of industry, entrepreneurs, and the best academic minds in engineering today. When corporations want to expand their workforce, solve problems, challenge their thinking, they often turn to IEEE for advice and assistance.
Boasts an international corps of volunteers; volunteer-driven activities allows for lower costs of operations
Operates in 160 countries. It has extensive networks in G7 and G20 countries and is growing even larger in places like China, India, and Nigeria.
Designs and leads more than 1,600 conferences in more than 80 countries, harnessing discussions and demonstrations of vital disciplines for more than 15,000 people to explore and share.
Is the largest publisher of academic engineering research by a considerable margin. IEEE publications have a global readership with more than 160 research journals and magazines annually, reaching hundreds of thousands of readers in industry, academia and the general public.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
