Programs and results
What we aim to solve
SUDS ( Servicemembers Undertaking Disabled Sports) has been in operation since 2007 and is supported by volunteers who help to make the organization continue to operate. Our growth is limited without the ability to have a dedicated staff to support the ongoing operation. In addition, SUDS operates solely from private donations and fundraising activities throughout the year. SUDS is actively seeking a corporate sponsor to support the sustainability and growth of the program. There are over 50,000 injured service members and we are only scratching the service with who we are able to help.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Adaptive Sports
SUDS provides training that prepares the wounded, injured or ill injured service member for adventure sports.
SUDS
SUDS was established in February of 2007 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. The program is for service members who have a permanent physical disability requiring adaptation. Our program is run by dedicated staff and volunteers who are passionate about helping our service members learn about adventure sports. Our staff are dedicated to the Mission and 80% of all our Board Members are former or current military.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to continue to grow the program and offer more activities that will improve the lives of our nation's wounded, injured, and ill service members. SUDS's goal is to continue to train the warriors in challenging and rewarding sports activities that help facilitate their rehabilitation and promote mobility. The goal of SUDS is to offer sports activities that not only can aid in their recovery during rehabilitation but also that they can enjoy throughout their life.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We are offering other adventure sports outside of diving in order to reach more veterans. We have expanded the program to include rock climbing, mountain biking, whitewater sports, backpacking, fishing canyoneering and snow skiing. Our plan is to obtain referrals from this who have already participated in our past programs . We plan to have minimum of two trip per month every month.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
John Thompson, Executive Director of SUDS in addition to be a training and certified SCUBA instructor, from 1993 to 2013 John worked for the Colorado Outward Bound School as an Instructor, Course Director and Staff Trainer in their alpine mountaineering program.
In 2017 John set up a trip for a a small group of SUDS participants to Arizona for a hiking experience. It was so successful that in October 2018 another trip is planned.
SUDS is also planning to offer Yoga while on SUDS Diving trips. This training will be offered by Carla Chatterton, SUDS Board member and Yoga practitioner for over 10 years. She is planning on completed her instructor training in early 2018 and then follow up with advance training with focus on wounded service members.
