The Marol Academy Primary School
Established in May 2008, the Marol Academy Primary School emphasizes the education of girls in a safe and accessible environment. When the school opened, 330 young persons showed up to enroll. Many had walked far distances to attend school, boys being allowed by their families to walk farther from home than were girls. Once all the girls who wished to enroll were listed on the roster, boys were able to enroll. In the first school year, 60% of pupils were girls. It was not possible to turn away boys, many of which had been former child soldiers and were desperate to go to school. The policy has been continued to first enroll all girls who show up to the school, and when space permits, boys can enroll.
There had been hope that the RSS government would begin to take on financial responsibility (e.g. paying teacher salaries) for the school, but with the violent upheaval in the country, resulting from the power struggle between President Salva Kiir and his vice-President Riek Machar, that hope has been dashed for now, even though the Ministry of Education has mandated a longer school year from 7 to 9 months. The Marol Academy now struggles to raise the $26,400/year needed for 22 teacher's salaries. Previously, with fewer teachers and a shorter school year, and with help from international friends in Germany and the U.K., three classroom blocks--with classrooms in each--were built. Also, latrines for boys, girls and teachers were constructed. A library, which is the pride of the school and village stands as a beacon of hope and learning. Most of our revenues have come from individual donors. Our executive director, Prof. Jok Madut Jok, was educated before war between north and south Sudan destroyed or closed all schools in the south. He is now an American citizen, teaching at a university in Los Angeles, and travels to Marol to oversee the quality of education at the school a minimum of twice a year. Because his community enabled him to get an education, secondary in south Sudan, and post-secondary in Egypt and the U.S. (his doctorate was done at U.C.L.A.), he is committed to passing forward the opportunity of education and achievement he was given.
