Ride for Reading Book Delivery via Bicycle
Ride for Reading volunteers gather once a month to deliver books via bicycle to the students of various Title I schools. A Ride for Reading representative talks to the children about the importance of literacy, helmet wearing, and a healthy life as well as an introduction to the different types of bicycles (commuter, cyclocross, mountain, road, fixie, etc.) The representative has the students take the RfR Pledge: I promise to read my book twice.I will never ever…Ever, ever, ever…Ever, everThrow my book away.I will pass it on to a friend…Family member…Neighbor…Classmate…Or someone else I know. And I promise…To be the best student for the rest of the year Volunteers then place all of the donated books in a central location, separated by grade level, similar to a book fair. Each child in the school gets to choose 1-3 books that they take home with them. and promises to pass along the book to a friend.
Teacher Book Pick-Ups
We invite k-12th grade teachers to our warehouse several times a year to choose books for their students. The books are to be given to the students to keep at their homes (primary) or to help build their classroom libraries.
National Ride for Reading Week
National Ride for Reading Week is held one week a year in May (also National Bike Month). During this time we ask Ride for Reading supporters (via social media, newsletters, corporate parters, etc.) around the country to bring our mission to their city. Once interest is shown they are guided through a SOP process to collect books, organize cyclists, and deliver books to children from low-income neighborhoods in their area.
