What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The perennial mission of the Ojai Valley Green Coalition is to advance a sustainable and resilient Ojai Valley. However, our tactics are evolving. We believe, with your help, we can make a significant impact going forward, as we continue to identify the right problems and develop programs that work, continue to be a bridge between policymakers and community members, and help accelerate collaboration and cooperation in pursuit of intelligent and practical projects that address our challenges today and tomorrow. We have accomplished a citywide ban on plastic bags, Ojai Ride and Roll, town halls focused on Fire Safe Building, Seed Swaps, Earth Day celebrations, E-waste collections, Green Living tours, creek clean-ups, workshop series at The Ojai Demonstration Garden, to name a few.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Ojai Community Demonstration Garden

In 2011, OVGC started providing fiscal sponsorship for a Community Garden (Ojai Valley of the Moon) located by the offices of the Ojai Land Conservancy on Baldwin Road. (2022 - this has been suspended for the time being. )

In 2015, our involvement deepened by actively managing the fruit trees, garden plots, and membership while we obtained funding to revitalize the property. This site had collaborations with US Fish & Wildlife, Monarch Arc, and the Ojai Valley Bee Club to support pollinators and propagate native milkweed species.

In December 2017, the largest wildfire in the recorded history of California burned through northwestern Ventura County, completely surrounding the city of Ojai, and destroying hundreds of homes and hundreds of thousands of acres of public land. In January a diverse group of citizens from the Ojai Valley, eager to help in the recovery effort, began meeting about once a month on Sunday at the public library.

The Green Coalition was asked to facilitate the ensuing discussions, which have featured local wildlife and watershed experts, members of the city council and environmental leaders, and dozens of concerned citizens and volunteers.

Water security has been a primary focus of the Ojai Valley Green Coalition for over 10 years. We offer watershed approach resources and best practices for the Ojai community as we work together to sustainably manage the finite water resources available in our mediterranean climate region.

In an effort to reduce polluting greenhouse gas emissions, the Ojai Valley Green Coalition is actively working to support clean, renewable energy initiatives in our area. One such project was the Clean Power Alliance, which was a newly formed Community Choice Energy program that launched in 2018. The program was developed in Los Angeles County and expanded to include Ventura County. OVGC supported and informed its membership of the green choices in this program and continues to be supportive as key changes occur.

OVGC took on the mission to keep the skies as dark as possible in the Ojai Valley, so we can see the most we can of the night sky and stars above. Ojai Valley Green Coalition members support the continued presence of a Dark Sky community, following the guidelines established by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA).

Relatives With Roots is a new, arts education program to encourage students (ages 8 - 11) to learn how to draw and paint through observation of the natural world. We believe that a sustainable and resilient Ojai Valley begins with empowering youth and advocating for the rights of Nature.

The initial program sessions took place in the City of Ojai, at Cluff Vista Park which has a diverse collection of native plants, ample seating, and community accessibility that is an ideal outdoor classroom for this program. We are discussing plans to do another program, and/or teach local groups and schools how to do the program themselves, to reach more children in the Ojai Valley.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We continue to build a strong coalition of like-minded collaborative partners who can help each other design and/or support the implementation of high-impact programs and projects, focused on the varied areas that increase resilience and the ability to thrive. For example, this includes improving the positive relationships with and mitigating the negative impacts upon the all we find in our environment (Earth, air, water, fire, food, animals, people) here in the Valley, and abroad (e.g., abroad: green purchasing strategies from remote vendors).

As stated earlier, a high-level strategy to accomplish these include partnering with like-minded collaborative partners who can help each other design and/or support the implementation of high-impact programs and projects, focused on the varied areas that increase resilience and the ability to thrive.

Our capabilities for meeting the goals we outline include not only backgrounds and experiences of the Board members, but also those of our strategic partners, including the City of Ojai's direct support and involvement in funding necessary research and development of solutions.

We've helped cement changes in local transportation issues and developments towards converting speed-abused highways into pedestrian and bike-friendly passages; influenced getting rid of non-recyclable plastic bags among retailers within the County; influenced the passing of nighttime residential and commercial lighting directions and levels to achieve darker nighttime skies; established a community garden where workshops on improved gardening and food growing are presented to homeowners.

Over the years, OVGC has also promoted recycling; conducted e-waste collection events; facilitated seed swaps; promoted and educated on home-grown food; supported vital watershed and riparian creek cleanups; promoted and offered workshops on graywater solutions; promoted and supported increased use of bicycles in and around town; and more.

We continue to work with local influencers and leaders, including City government officials, as we deal with the social and environmental goals we develop and have before us, to ensure we continue to thrive in the Ojai Valley.
