What we aim to solve
Peaceful Acres Horses is committed to being a resource for positive change for at-risk, unwanted and slaughter-bound equines. Over 100, 000 American equines are shipped to slaughter in Canada and Mexico annually. This gruesome practice needs our uppermost attention and intervention as equine welfare organizations and citizens of The United States. As 501 c 3 equine welfare organizations, individually we are limited in our effectiveness, yet as a collaborative member of other equine welfare associations we are making a positive impact on safeguarding American Equines. This is difficult and slow to happen, but is attainable with steadfast commitment, collaboration, fiscal resources, education and compassion.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Equine Guided Experiential Learning
Peaceful Acres Horses offers experiential learning services through youth, adult, family, veteran and women’s equine guided learning programs. PAH has grown significantly during the past 13 years, into a sanctuary that is home to 72 rescued and retired equines who live on our 156 acre sanctuary. Daily EGEL services are provided to our participants who are considered “at-risk” due to grief, loss, trauma and mental health fragility / disability. Peaceful Acres Horses receives referrals from organizations serving youth, families and adults in the Capital Region who benefit from the implementation of Equine Guided Experiential Learning into their treatment plan. Once referrals are completed, grant funding support and matching funds from the referring organization support small group programs consisting of eight to ten sessions. Equine Guided Experiential Learning sessions help to improve communication, focus, recognition of boundaries, self – esteem and behavioral controls. Equine Guided Experiential Learning sessions help to alleviate depression, anxiety, panic, fear and hopelessness.
Equine Rescue
Peaceful Acres Horses offers equine rescue, rehabilitation, re-homing and sanctuary to elderly and hard to place horses. The horses at the sanctuary are treated with dignity, respect and the best in veterinary and farrier care. A team of equine specialists and professional staff make it possible to provide exceptional care to the at-risk horse, whether due to neglect , cruelty, owner surrender or rescue from a kill-pen. All horses at PAH are offered a chance at an improved quality of life and a forever home.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Peaceful Acres Horses serves to safeguard American equines who are at-risk, unwanted or slaughter-bound by offering beneficial rescue, re-homing, adoption and retirement programs. Located in NY State we offer assistance to equines within NY State and surrounding States - CT, VT, NJ and Massachusetts.
Our ultimate goal at PAH is to offer forever guardianship either through our exceptional adoption placement program or within our Sanctuary Care program at our location in NY State.
Many of our rescued equines are partners in our emotionally supportive programs (EAL/P) that serve youth, adults, families, veterans, seniors, women and emotionally limited and economically disadvantaged people.
Working within our community and using social media as a platform, we are advocating for at-risk equines and educating the public on how they can become involved in safeguarding American Equines.
Our Volunteer CareGivers play a pivotal role in not only the daily care of the equines at PAH, they also become advocates and assist at many levels to bring awareness to the issues plaguing American equines. It is our goal to invite new volunteers into our organization and enlighten them to the positive impact they can have on the lives of the equines in their care and who are in need outside of the organization.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Building Community has perhaps been the number one reason PAH has been able to continue our vision and mission since 2007. Not a day goes by that as a team we are not talking about PAH and the equines who are in our care to others within our community. Our team is committed to provide advocacy and support and it shows by the number of people and community based businesses and organizations they invite to learn about PAH and our mission and join with us in our vision.
Our network must expand or we will not be able to keep up with the demands placed upon us as an organization. We expand our network mostly through word of mouth conversations with friends, family and colleagues, inviting individuals and groups to visit the sanctuary, attending community based events, hosting events at the sanctuary, MatchMaking Days for adoption placements, social media platforms, and collaboration with other associations and businesses.
Peaceful Acres Horses is a community of like minded and compassionate people who are driven to make a positive difference in the lives of people and horses.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Peaceful Acres Horses' number one strength is in the people we associate the organization with. It is through our network of individuals, businesses, community based organizations, community leaders and decision makers, grant-makers, philanthropic foundations, groups and hard working and compassionate people, that PAH has been able to stay on task with our mission to assist at-risk and slaughter-bound equines.
Despite fiscal hardships at times, the organization has learned how to make the best of a not so great situation and create more contacts to make the very best of a situation. Our local feed suppliers, hay farmers, veterinarian and farriers have made it possible for PAH to provide exceptional care to the equines that call Peaceful Acres Horses their safe home.
Our EAL/P programs have changed slightly over the years to best provide what people need within our community. PAH offers small group programs to best serve women, youth, veterans, seniors and emotionally fragile individuals. Most of our referrals come from local not for profit organizations, self referral and schools. Our Horse and Donkey Hugs program is emotionally supportive and also provides for enlightenment and fun for people in times that people need it most.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Over the past 13 years (2007-2020) Peaceful Acres Horses has focused on a straightforward vision and mission to assist people and horses to achieve an improved quality of life. We have done so through community collaboration, steadfast commitment and the generosity of our volunteer caregivers and committed contributors.
We will continue to strive to be a beneficial resource for the people and horses (equines) who need us and we will be diligent on accessing needed resources to continue to provide for those who need the organization now and moving forward.
