Centre for Emergency Care and Recovery

This is The Banyan’s flagship model that offers hospital-based care for persons with acute mental health care needs. A multidisciplinary team offers critical time interventions, biopsychosocial care with a focus on clinical, social, functional and personal recovery. Notably, these person-centric services also include user-led service audits and grievance redressal bodies that ensure accountability, quality enhancement, fidelity to values and goals and adequate focus on social architecture. In addition, recovery services enable exit pathways to families of origin or working women's hostels, independent living and supportive housing in communities. Over 4000 individuals have accessed these services over 25 years, and, approximately 60% have returned home.
This approach to care now stands as a benchmark for holistic and humane care for homeless persons with mental illness. The ECRC approach has been adopted by the Government of Tamil Nadu and currently, five such Centres operate in District Hospitals and receive public funding. As a result, local access to care is promoted and MH care for marginalised groups are integrated into primary care. The Banyan runs two ECRCs in Chennai and Kanchipuram with a bed strength of 110 and 15 respectively and works with the government of Tamil Nadu in implementing two ECRCs in Vellore and Tiruppur, with bed capacities of 30 each.

The reintegration and aftercare component of The Banyan’s ECRC has been replicated in 3 mental hospitals in Kerala, namely Calicut, Thrissur and Trivandrum, to reunite clients with their families, and facilitate access to aftercare services that address social disadvantages concomitant to their mental health needs. This initiative was advocated by The Banyan and the Government of Kerala to ensure that clients do not stay in mental hospitals and acute care facilities any longer than they need to, and that care is provided and sustained in the community.
