Mission

AWF is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving and restoring wildlife and its habitat across New Mexico. We work to increase public understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of New Mexico’s wildlife and wild lands, and to educate our community about how to tend and protect the ecosystems that sustain us. We partner and collaborate with other nonprofit organizations and public agencies to engage volunteers in ecological restoration projects that enhance the health and biological integrity of their public lands. We develop and demonstrate innovative landscape restoration techniques that improve ecological resilience in the face of an ever-changing world. We create lasting impact by building community around the work of habitat restoration.

Habitat Restoration Service Projects

AWF organizes and leads volunteer ecological restoration service projects on federal, state, and city/county public lands throughout New Mexico. AWF members participate in these projects, assisting land management agencies in important wildlife habitat restoration initiatives which in many cases would not be completed without volunteer contribution.

Project activities have included: restoring riparian areas by building one-rock dams, Zuni bowls, and other structures to induce stream meandering and control erosion; removing or constructing fences; planting native vegetation; and monitoring wildlife. The projects apply cutting-edge environmental science (wildlife, riparian, and watershed) to improve New Mexico’s public lands, while at the same time providing an opportunity to educate citizens about ecological processes and issues affecting their public lands.

Population(s) Served

AWF organizes and hosts monthly meetings in Albuquerque, New Mexico, that are open to the general public as well as to AWF members. Presentations are advertised in our monthly newsletter, our website, and our MeetUp page.

At each meeting, guest speakers provide presentations to inform and educate attendees on topical issues affecting wildlife and habitat restoration. Speakers have included employees of state and federal land management agencies, representatives of conservation groups, and experts in the field of environmental science.
