Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Many musicians lack affordable health insurance and are unable to afford basic health care needs.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Apocalypse Meow
Apocalypse Meow is a program designed to disburse money to working underinsured or uninsured musicians who have suffered medical emergencies that keep them from performing. In 2013, the fund was renamed, Abby's Fund for Musicians' Health Care, after the death of our founder Abigail Henderson who lost her valiant battle with cancer. The annual Apocalypse Meow fundraiser in November is how these funds are replenished. Over $240,000 in grants have been given to Kansas City area musicians since the inception of this program. It brings together a wide range of people from the community to experience the best of Kansas City’s music and help raise money to help musicians. The event includes auctions and raffles of items donated mostly by small, area businesses further fostering a sense of community pride.
MidCoast Takeover
MidCoast Takeover showcases Kansas City area bands annually during South by Southwest (the nation’s premier music festival) in Austin, Texas. This event creates exposure on an international level to the amazing level of talent of Kansas City area musicians. MidCoast Takeover is curated specifically to include as diverse array of musical genres as possible that best represent the current Kansas City area music scene. MMF partners with local music venues, music journalists, local radio hosts, and those active in the local musical community to select artists for this showcase. The event is sponsored mainly by Kansas City area businesses as an additional way to foster community pride.
Educational Programs for Musicians
In conjunction with the KCVLAA and Crossroads Music Festival, the MMF hosts a Legal Bootcamp for Musicians annually to educate musicians on important legal aspects of the music industry. MMF partnered with Inter Urban Arts House to host two additional educational events for musicians focusing on promotions and other aspects of the music industry. More educational programming is planned for the future.
COVID-19 Relief Fund
In March of 2020, the Midwest Music Foundation created a COVID-19 relief fund to assist musicians and musician workers affected by the pandemic.
Since that time, over $89,000 in small grants have been given to over 350 musicians and music industry workers.
MMF plans to continue this program as long as the need is there.

Equity strategies

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
