Mission

The Foundation, among other charitable purposes, endeavors to protect the health of communities by encouraging the certification of the public health workforce and by seeking funding for this and other public health workforce related purposes. The public's health is enhanced by the Foundation's assuring a competent and certified public health workforce. Until 2008, public health was the last health profession without a certification, credential, or license. Therefore, certification puts public health on par with other professions. Certified in Public Health (CPH) professionals have demonstrated the knowledge and skills relevant to contemporary public health, by completion of an exam, continuing education, and periodic re-assessment. Those who support CPH professionals are participating in a mechanism for accountability for the public's health.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Pilot test of CPH exam as pre-graduation requirement

In 2010, 37 public health schools and programs initiated the idea of an examination before graduation as an improved means of ascertaining the strengths of their educational programs, particularly for new schools as they rely heavily on developing teaching responsive to the ASPH core competencies on which the examination is based. In addition, university accrediting organizations are requiring universities to document that their published learning goals are being achieved by their students, a need readily met by a validated national examination. Similarly, the increased emphasis on tracking the length of time between matriculation and graduation has put pressure on schools having a master's thesis as a graduation requirement to use an examination instead. For the FAPHC, a pre-graduation examination would enhance the rate of acceptance of this new credential. In 2011, all 44 schools of public health and several more programs of public health agreed to extend CPH eligibility to their stduents.

In 2009-2012, the FAPHC accepted invitations to present in-person at the Pennsylvania Public Health Association Annual Meeting, the American Public Health Association, University of Albany - SUNY, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, University of North Carolina at Greensboro/North Carolina Society of Public Health Education, Pennsylvania Public Health Association, West Virginia University, Society of Public Health Education, and Thomas Jefferson University. The FAPHC also provided outreach through webinars and videoconferencing to Boston University, University of Southern California, University of Pennsylvania, and the University of North Texas Health Science Center. These events educate the public health academic community and the next generations of the public health workforce about efforts to professionalize the field.
