Mission

Consequence Forum is a 501(c)(3) that addresses the human experiences, realities, and consequences of war and geopolitical violence through literature and art. We provide the public with works and voices from around the world to promote a clearer and more nuanced understanding of what’s at stake in choosing to wage war or engage in conflict.

Notes from the nonprofit

For its first 11 years, CF operated with a 100% volunteer staff, with the Founding Editor filling many roles until his death in April 2020. At that point, CF needed to shift to paid staff, including adding a paid Executive Editor. That shift accounted for the growth in CF expenses beginning in FY2020. Expenses continued to grow in FY2021 and FY2022, due to increases in compensation to the CF Editorial Team and adding a second annual CF publication. In FY2020, receipt of a sizable grant and donations in memory of the Founding Editor increased CF income nearly fourfold that year. FY2020’s surplus covered the FY2021 deficit and a portion of the FY2022 deficit. CF’s subscriptions, donations, and grant funding have continued to increase substantially year-by-year, although have not fully kept pace with expenses. Accordingly, CF has greatly expanded its grant-writing activities and earned revenue streams.

Of Consequence

Of Consequence is a video series that creates a space for the public and those with expertise in the consequences of war or geopolitical violence to have access to one another. These individuals with expertise include not only authors and artists who’ve drawn on their personal experiences as a combatant, victim, or witness to create their work, but also scholars whose career is heavily concerned with these realities.

Some of these authors include Pulitzer Prize winner Peter Balakian, National Book Award winner Phil Klay, and Los Angeles Times Book Award finalist Tom Sleigh, while scholars have included University of Waterloo (Canada) Professor Maša Torbica and University of San Francisco Assistant Professor Liat Berdugo.
